Cleaning salt stains off interior carpet

I live in Canada, in the winter they put salt on the roads. The rubber mats i have do not cover up the entire floor/carpet. Some leaked last winter onto the carpet and no i got dired up salt there... any ideas on how to remove this? I was thining somehting along the lines of caprter shampoo or something, but need to know which ones are the best...

I've never had to deal with it, but I'd say to do something like the following:

- Vacuum all lose solids up.
- Soak with a carpet or oxi-cleaner.
- Use an exrtactor/steam cleaner on the affected part.

I know sometimes salt stains on carpetting take awhile to get out for some cars, so you might have to do this a few times.
