from reading about intercoolers and etc, i thought there were 3 types of intercoolers, top, side, and front but from researching it a little i've only come across top mounts and front mounts. so my question is a side mount the same as a top mount?

I've only seen a top mount intercooler on a wrx/sti.... but no they are different the top mount sits on the top and the side mount is usually found in the front corner area hidden behind the bumper like on a stock Gsx or Supra...

While a FMIC is mathematically the most efficient for cooling purposes, the heat differences makes a very small difference.

The only difference in intercoolers are:

Bar & Plate vs Tube & Fin
OD size of charge piping
Position of pipe in/outlet
and volume (duh)

side mount intercoolers cone stock on twin turbo 300zx, twin turbo supras and GST/GSX eclipses. SR20 240's and RB20 240's also come with side mounts. They work with low boost but are not as efficent of course bc of their size.

Well now that u mention it, my friend bought a DSM that supposedly ran 12's and still had a sidemount so i can believe that. Im not big into DSM's so i dnt have much experience with them. 300+ is more than most DIy setup see so yeah, a side mount intercooler would be fine. Most of the ppl dwn here i know are doing there own turbo setups and going for like 500 hp though. This one dude made 515 with a stock ls bottom end, factory sleeves and a stock GSR head. That was the first mtr he ever put together and everybody was ducking and hiding when he started it bc they swore it was gonna break. lol!!!

another thing is w/ fmic you tend to get more lag, but many honda's dont have the opportunity for a tmic or smic.
