ok so i have an 88 civic, and the fan doesn't work so i decided...well my boyfriend decided that we would hook it up to a switch on the dashboard.... so i decided to run a wire from the battery to an inline relay fuse to a switch in my dash then straight to my fan. the ground wire coming out of the fan i just put to my negative terminal on my battery. The only thing is when i turn on the switch the fan doesn't turn on. now i've been researching and it says that it turns on when the temperature gets to a certain degree....so if it's not at that degree will it not turn on no matter how many times i flick that switch or did i just do something wrong???

If you hard wire the fan CORRECTLY to just a switch you should be able to manuall turn it on. If you just merely added a switch without changing anything with the temp sensor.. then NO it will NOT turn on until the car has reached the SET TEMP for the fan to kick on at (not sure what it is for you car, but mines around 160-180F)

Assuming that your wiring and switch are fine, it sounds like the fan motor is dead. If you have a multimeter, there are some simple tests that you can do to pinpoint the problem with certainty.

The fan isn't dead, we troubleshooted the wiring by hooking up two wires, the positive and the negative and directly putting them on the battery, the fan kicked on and I had changed it so the fan sucked not blew air. ill go over the wiring once again, but i can't see why the temp sensor would have anything to do with it if i hard wired it into my battery.

Do you have a multimeter? The fan is hard wired to the battery and switch, so since the fan works, then the problem is either the wires or the switch.
