Crazy shift indicator light

The shift indicator light doesn't make any sense on a VX I might buy. It seems to work as expected in first or second gear, but it gets wacky beyond that. It tells me to shift to a HIGHER gear if I am trying to get more power, but tells me my current gear is OK if I let up on the gas. this seems backwards to me. For example, It was telling me to shift into 5th when I was going up a very steep hill at under 30mph. But on level ground it's perfectly fine with my doing 30mph in 3rd...

Is this really how it is supposed to be?

Something seemed odd about the drivetrain of that car as if there was some flex to it or something; I wonder if this is part of the same problem.

Sounds like its based on the load the car is under. For instance, if you're going uphill you've got the pedal a ways down, if your on flat ground and you have the pedal that far down then you would probably want to shift. Probably can't calculate the difference

Yeah it was like that, but it's hard for me to believe it was supposed to be like that- why would they encourage the driver to shift up earlier when the engine is under load. I'd think they'd want the driver to shift up later under such circumstances. Also the fact that it didn't do that in the first two gears makes me think maybe it was misbehaving.
