d15z6 non vtec dash loom

i have an ej9 converted to a d15z6 non e-vtec. the car is running fine but i was told by a friend of mine that the standard 1.4 dash loom isnt letting me go into vtec. i just want to know if i need to get an ek3 dash loom or if my ej9 one is fine. i was also told by someone else i know that i can just ad another wire from the rev clock to the vtec solenoid and that should let me go into vtec. i just want to get this all cleared up.
