D16Y7 cam with stock ECU, can it be done?

My friend just bought a 99 Civic DX coupe 5-speed. Obviously there's the mini me swap, but I found some cams at bisimoto that should work with his D16Y7.

The question is, can he run a 229* Duration regrind camshaft on a stock ECU (upgraded springs/retainers and adjustable cam gear)??

I ask because I drive a 89 Corolla and I know you can run 264* cams on a stock 4AGE if you delete TVIS and adjust your timing a hair, which is what I plan to do.

First: why? That motor is gutless, and unless you're boosting (hope not with that cam), you won't have any benefit from it.
Second: I'm sure you could, but you're going to throw a CEL, and it will likely run like absolute poo.

My friend knows very little about cars so either I would be doing the work, or he would pay to have it done at a shop so it would have to be cheap. From what I've read, a mini me swap only gives about 10hp, maybe a little more if you actually port the head/manifold before you install it.

I figured running a 229* duration cam, adjustable gear, finding some cheap performance valve springs, gasket matching the head/manifold himself, header, and maybe some light weight pulleys he would be freeing up a little more power than a mini me swap, easier to do, and still keeping the price low. Just something fun for the street.

He currently just uses the car as a delivery driver during the day and cruising around at night.
Perhaps going more than 229* he would run into issues, but curious if anyone can run this cam with stock ECU. If its a mild enough increase, the ECU should adjust the fuel, ignition, etc to match it like my Toyota?

I installed a cam without tuning on a 99 Civic. Well, the car was being put down for more work, but I had a chance to drive it with the cam only. CELs, idle issues, car was slow as balls, running rich as f**k.

Don't bother without tuning.
