D16Y8 Build up

Was good fellas, not to sound like an idiot, but I just bought this 2000 Honda Civic EX from a friend, has a vtec D16Y8 engine and theres times where it makes a popping sound. Could this be vtec engaging and when does it engage? I really didn't have no interest in making it a tuner cause Im more into bass and im making it my project, But now that Im liking the fact that turn heads with bass and when the vtec engages I want to make it into both. Can anyone without being a d**k help me out as in when does this engage or what can I do for it to sound more constant. Thanks.

I'll assume that this^ is not a troll question.

VTEC engagement should NOT be a loud noise. You probably have an issue, but it's hard to pinpoint from the sparse information.
