So i have a 1999 honda civic ex with a d16y8 .. i bought this car because my other civic was wrecked.. and well.. when i brought it home and ran it it would do a very very very light white smoke.. (never really cared)
and after workin on it... now it idles high ( approx 1600 rpm ) and it smoke whenever i throttle up .. i can constantly touch the throttle and if i look back it smokes... i dont think its burning oil.. also i dont know if its burning antifreeze.. my head gasket i have no idea if its good or not ( i think if you do a compression test then that will let you know? .. i have no idea) i did a compression test.. all my cylinders ranged from 132-149.. i dont know what to do at this point.. so if you guys have any ideas let me know....

Please only post one thread per issue. I've locked the original one since this one is more informative. Moved back to Engine-Tech though :thumbs up

Sounds like it could definitely be the head gasket.

Why would there be metal in the radiator for a blown head gasket? Curious to the train of thought on that one. Also compression test doesnt tell a blown head gasket. Pressure testing the cooling system might.

If its white smoke your head gasket is toast.

i dont think i have anything to test the cooling system and the metal in the radiator was something i read somewhere... but alright i need to price out some head gasket for it. what do they run ? about 50 bucks?

A leak down tester should be used to test for a bad head gasket. It's the most reliable test . You can also try a block tester.

how well does the cooling system retain coolant? do you find yourself having to fill it up constantly? i had this same problem with a Cadillac sts a few years back head gasket went.. rule of thumb blue smoke=oil burning white smoke=water burning... when the car is on go to the exhaust and take a small wiff... if it has a bit of a sweet smell to it its most likely a blown head gasket.. but i agree a test will yield the best results
