D16Y8 where to find these?

Let me start by saying I'm not a master mechanic so I'm not really interested in doing any swaps, which is all I can seem to find for my car is motors to swap to.

Car is a 1999 civic ex 1.6L vtec it has a hole through the front of the block (threw a rod, not sure if it banged up the valves yet or not) but I've finally got the money to get another engine or short block (if the head is ok) but am having a lot of trouble finding a decent engine, I've check hmotors but they had no d16s only d15s and I want to keep the same kind of engine, anyone have any places they've experienced good service and motors from either online or within the Michigan area? I've found a few junker motors in junkyards but I'd rather do it right and find a good motor that's going to last so I don't have to redo this in another year or two, seeing as I can't afford it (cashier salary, oh yeah!)

Also: checked with my local dealership that gave me a hefty $4000 estimate on a completely new short block, which I will not pay more for a regular short block than I paid for my car lol

Buy the junkyard y8 and either rebuild it yourself or have someone else rebuild it. You can choose to go with another swap if you want. I paid about 250 for my last engine i pulled with so much extra s**t i didn't need. I ended up selling my head for half of it. I then had the motor rebuilt of course i had more work done to it than normal but just find a good shop to rebuild it. If you really want now would be the time to get you some good pistons and rods as well.

well the only problem with that is the cheapest i can find one is about $900 with 100k and its about 150 miles from me, plus shouldnt i worry about the sleeves being messed up if it wasnt taken well care of? about how much would you guesstimate a rebuild to cost on a short block if i bought it and assuming the y8 head on my current car is still good?

im not really trying to build a drag car by any means, just a DD i need to get back on the road, although id prefer not to downgrade anything by any means.

If you pay more than $400 for an OEM D16 block you're getting ripped off. And even that much is a stretch unless you're in a pinch. A short block oem rebuild kit is super cheap on www.rockauto.com :thumbs up

... or Amazon for that matter.

Another option then is ebay. Can look at d16z6 as well. I paid 800 for my rebuild that was me already owning the rods and pistons. I got my block bored and notched as well along with everything removed. Your best bet is to call around to shops and get a price. To save you some money as well try and get everything pulled and reinstalled in your car by yourself as long ad you have a place you can do so. If not that can be several hundred. Start calling and getting quotes. Your best bet since you dont care about getting buikt for boost or so forth buy the engine you want and take it to shop and have them check ot over then replace what you need to.

you will probably have to travel, as you know, Import doesn't go over good with Michigan and not many people have them like somewhere, lets say Florida.

lok at online junkyards that ship, i know its probably more than you WANT to spend, but it'll be worth it in the long run

Tigerjapanese is in Canada, all the northern states have cheaper shipping rates with them.

funny you should mention that, i had about 6 junkyards hang up the phone when i said i was looking for a honda engine, none of them carry anything foreign.. and not really sure where to look for those types of junkyards, and how would i know if the engine is any good until it shows up on my doorstep lol

@alaska any civic engines in my area are prices extremely high because the lack of them, most junkyards around michigan refuse to take any foreign, so my options are very very limited, and on car-part.com the closest thing to a decent motor in my range is about 150 miles away @900 bucks

@failsafe never used ebay, not really sure i trust it all that much and does a d16z6 bolt into my car without any mods to harness or ecu or anything like that?

@blood not really into swapping to a much different engine unless it will bolt right in without mods

Thats good info to have =) Even though I'm in Florida now I want a backup plan for when..and if my engine fails

I grew up in Michigan, when I posted on FB that I bought a Civic I actually had people unfriend me because their ties to the big 3 are that strong.

I'm not surprised they hung up you lol

I say go with Blood's idea and use or at least explore tiger japanese, they're close to you

This is news to me, that "most junkyards refuse to take any foreign." I had my BMW scrapped in 2 minutes by the first place I called. Perhaps you should try junkyards outside of Owosso? Seriously, I had to drive all of 50 miles (Jackson area, of all places) to get a z6 with about 135k miles on it. Came with an auto trans that I scrapped, but no alternator or starter, paid $500.

well using car-part (the junkyard website) theres not many in michigan, i believe i found 2-3, one place i called and didnt care for the numbers they gave me on the engine (bad compression, for $900), the other one has 0 info listed so i didnt bother.. basically trying to find something thats going to last me a long time without having to go through this process again in the near future, and would hate to drop 800-1000 on a junkyard motor to turn around and have it be junk like the current engine in the car.
