do I NEED hondata?

I'm starting to price out my turbo build for my d16y5 (laugh it up). So far, I've got vitara pistons, eagle rods, the turbo kit, p28 ecu with hondata s300. That's about all I need right? I've spent about 5 hours researching what to get and what not, but the question is what happens it i bolt up a 7psi turbo setup without a new ecu and keep my stock obd2 ecu? Is that no good at all? I know this has probably been asked but I legitimately can't find too much about turboing a d16. Thanks

It will throw a Cel from what I heard and burn your motor up real quick without some sort of an ems system. You don't need hondata but you need something like it, you need a chipped ecu then you pick between hondata, ectune, or chrome.I have a y5 also that I'm boosting soon. The y series blocks have oiling issues so look that up if your building your block

You'll have a very very hard time finding a tuner to tune obd2 so you might as well convert to obd1 with a p28. I'd recommend ARP head studs too since d-series are known for head lifting

So if i get a chipped p28 done by the phearable, the trubo kit, low comp pistons, bigger injectors, and a walbro 255, is that literally all I need? oh, and obd2a to obd1 harness. That's it, right?

i'd skip the prechipped ecu's and get a virgin p28, what ever kit and parts to make it work..then get it all tuned by a tuner..that way you get everything tuned to spec and not the ballpark number

the only thing about that is that I doubt there are any tuners within 400 miles of me. I live in northern Maine. Near Presque Isle...closest one would probably be in Portland, ME...that's a 5 hour drive for me haha

you can always buy a kit that has an ecu tuned especially for the kit such as the correct injectors, turbo size, etc

Say nooooo to pre-tuned chips. If you want this thing to last, definitely get it tuned by a tuner. What I'm doing is throwing the kit on and driving it straight to my tuner. Sketchy, but it's not too bad.
Yes to injectors and the fuel pump especially. I'll be running the same one on a turboed GSR on 10ish lbs. And like 2slo said, definitely get the ARP head studs. And with 7lbs you realllllly don't need low compression pistons, but that's your call.
You don't really NEED a stand-alone system like Hondata, but if you have the money go ahead and do it. You can just get a boost controller and you'll be fine. That's what I'm doing :what:

phearable has always sketched me out. I hear his stuff is good, but I would NEVER run a chipped ECU based off of what I told someone I had. I prefer dyno tuning with someone who knows what they're doing. Your basemap is incredibly important. Also, as Alex said, you don't need to run low comp pistons for 7psi (give or take turbo size. I'm assuming you're running a t3/t4 with a small inlet/outlet). If you're going to get the put in, might as well do a full rebuild for boost and prep yourself for going upwards of 300hp in the future.

I honestly posted because my count was at 1,666. I it was freaking me out because that's the third time that number has come up today.

I don't see why you wouldn't just go on the safe and reliable side and tune it the right way. I have to drive to salt lake to get my beast tuned :/ I'm skeptical about driving it that long on a basemap lol

I was just suggesting phearable as a place to get a p28 socketed with hondata, that's what I did and had a reputable tuner then tune the car through hondata. I had nothing but good experience dealing with phearable.net. Hondata + tune is definitely the way to go though!

Yea even Phearable will tell you that you still need a time. The tune they put on is very basic just to get you started. When I had my boosted integra I ordered from him.
