EGR channels

Hi there,

Do we need to clean EGR valve and EGR channels? My car has done 110,000 miles here in the UK. I bought it when it had 107,000 miles. It doesn't have any check engine lights and drives well. Is is a good idea to clean or shall I just leave it.

Has a bit of idle issue to which I have noticed that throttal body is a bit dirty and thermostat must be stuck open as the fan doesn't start at all after long drive and cabin heating is poor.

My hands are always itchy to do preventive maintenance but is it really necessary to clean EGR paths? Thank you .

Under normal maintenance the EGR ports arn't cleaned unless theres an issue. EGR operates only during part throttle cruise- so it wont mess with your idle unless the EGR valve is physically stuck open- in which case a code would be set in the ECU for an EGR Fault. That being said it wouldn't hurt anything to clean them out, and ensure that each cylinder is getting an equal amount of Exhaust Gas, verses 1 or 2 cylinders choking down the Gases due to partial blockage on the other cylinders.
Sounds also like a thermostat issue- I always throw a new OEM thermostat in all Hondas I buy.
Good luck!

I would look into cleaning the IACV (idle air control valve) as well. If the throttle body is dirty, the IACV most likely is too. There's a small mesh screen that gets clogged up over time.

FYI, clogging EGR paths wont necessarily cause a service code and can impede performance and fuel efficiency well before doing so. I performed my last EGR system cleaning because I already had the fuel rail off and the ports had more build-up than I anticipated. If I recall correctly, the manual suggests it being done around 75,000 miles.

Did you change all the injector o rings in the process of doing the EGR channels? The injector O rings are bloody pricy but I am planning to buy them anyway as I don't want to get caught seeing them in bad condition once I pull the injectors out. I have ordered the EGR chamber & valve gaskets. Many thanks.

I had recently changed the injector o-rings not long before the last EGR cleaning so it wasnt a need for me. By the way, the EGR gasket is reusable so you couldve just cleaned it. At least you bought yourself added peace of mind.
