I have a feel nofx is going to be in here soon telling people not to call their 96-98 hatch ek4 or their 99-00 hatch ek9. they are just vin people on forum say the letters so that you know what year the car is or the generation of the car. example people will say i drive a ek and you will know ohh it's a 6gen hatch instead of typing 1996 civic hatch etc.

I dont think that they necessarily stand for anything, they do sort of have an order to them though.

generally: ek's are referred to as hatchbacks/coupes, ej's are coupes, and eg's are early 90 hatch's

as far as i know, its not AS common to see other chassis codes

your 98 coupe is an ej8. a regular 96-00 coupe (non si) is also an ej8. an si (99-00) is an em1. the only ek's are JDM despite what people claim. the correct chassis for a USDM 96-00 is an ej6. there was never a USDM ek manufactured. some people live in denial i guess...

No they aren't. ;) All USDM '96-'00 Civics are EJs EXCEPT for the '99-'00 Si, which is an EM.

It's all about chassis.

EKs are strictly overseas model 6th gen Civics. NOT just JDM cars though! EKs include some cars in South America, Africa and Europe just off the top of my head.

All USDM 6G coupes are not EJ8s either. Only the EXs are EJ8s (both the EX coupes and sedans). The correct chassis for a USDM '96-'00 is EJ. The nummber behind that general chassis code will vary depending on the trim.

As far as the US Civics..... (I'll just put them here for people not willing to click the link plus to seperate the US cars.)
