Electrical failure while installing indiglo gauges

I'm in the process of installing indiglo gauges right now and I've encountered a problem I didn't see covered in other posts. Everything went as planned until I got to the wiring (which seems to be the case for most people). The problem I've had with wiring is much different.

First thing I did was remove all the back lights (not the indicator lights) on the gauge cluster because I figured I wouldn't be needing them again with the new indiglo lighting.

Now came the part where I had to connect the red and black wires. I grounded the black wire and then I came up with what I thought was a really good idea for the hot wire. I removed one of the bulbs from its brown casing that is on the back of it and ran the red wire through it. Then I snapped the brown piece into one of the open bulb slots. Well, I got nothing. No lighting. A few minutes of fiddling later I noticed that the back lights for the heater were out as well.

I figured that I must have blown a fuse and put a new 10v fuse in the interial lighting fuse slot. Once again, no lights anywhere. I tried putting a normal bulb back into the gauge face and that didn't work either. So basically no interior lights. I know the fuse is fine because the other things connected to that fuse (license plate light and tail lights) were still functional.

Did I fry something?

Another thing is that the speedometer is apparently not function either. I found this odd because I've had a function and a broken speedo before. This one still falls smoothly if you raise it up a little unlike the broken one I had that would just fall around from place to place. With the car parked I removed the gauage face cover and lifted the speedo up gently, and I could tell that it was now being pushed back to zero (as it should when parked) but when I start moving, nothing happens... is that gauage a goner?

Thanks for you time.

put everything back together like it was before you screwed it up, and take the car to someone who ca follow directions instead of getting a wild idea, way to go .

That was helpful. The directions said "Find a power source." If you are going to flame, don't bother. The directions were about as detailed as those on box of popcorn consisting of helpful tips like "find the power source" and "install the switch". Oh yeah, and other helpful ones like "remove dash". Ah well, just as good of advice as you've given. Thanks a lot.

The advice on these forums mostly consisted of idea like ghetto rigging it with electrical tape to back of the gauges or connecting it to the hot wire on your headlights. Some people had also said they connected to the dimmer switch in the car but the directions said NOT to do that.

who really reads or even follow directions, men do not need direction, but their own intutition, again hook every thing back up and use you accessory wire on the radio, as your power source, or just use the dimmer switch, it will not hurt anything, or just have someone who has done this before so nothing gets messed up, not being a smartass, just trying to save you the trouble of you screwing up you interior lights like your current situation

I wire mines to the dimmer switch, I had that problem before but it wasn't because of the lights or any fuse, does your signal lights work????? if they don't is because you fry the relay and thats what happend to me, I was all freak out when my tach or lights wasn't working either, but it was just that, and by the way never do that again
