i wouldn't drive the car anymore, sad as it may seem...if you do like the car just fix the problem or swap in either a b16a2 or b18c1 motor. If you look around you'll be able to find them for cheap(under $2000) and since you already have a b series swap in your car all you'd need is the long block(assuming you'll use the LS tranny)..

B20 long blocks are cheap. Like a couple hundred bucks and you could just replace what you have. Or like above just grab a lil b16 or Gsr and use your ls transmission

You could rebuild but that increases your expenses. It also tells the best benefits from that block. A b16 head is what you want. Vtec conversions are simple now with kits like golden eagle's la/vtec kit.

Figure out your budget first and then you can decide what route to take.

I seee..
Well, im going to get the car looked at tommorow and will be making a decision from there.. If the rebuilds going to cost more than a new swap then forget that ... Either way one of the main issues for me now is for it to last till i can afford it!

Thanks everyone for your input. great community

I say find a cheap b20 or b18 b and slap it in there. Then figure out whats wrong with the bad boy and if the short block is somehow ok then get started on a b20v build that way you still have a car and you;ll have a boss motor to swap in later. Like Child said b20's are pretty cheap. Of course if you've got the cash and the time (winter breaks right around the corner) then maybe you could just slap a vtec head on the block as it is, but depending on the mileage I'd probably want to do a full rebuild before putting the b20 through that.

no doubt that sounds like a deec plan. Juice, i commend you on that GSR find and not giving up on your whip when u had that accident
But heres another variable: i have a potential buyer for the car, for some pretty good money too. should i just say goodbye, and buy a winter beater and start from scratch next summer?

Thanks bro, when you have a good teacher and the right tools you can learn to diy anything with hondas. As for selling the car its comes down to how much you like the car, I have a friend who has a 02 cougar we're currently rebuilding and engine for. That thing is poorly designed, a pain in the ass, and half of the parts are discontinued on it, but his late grandpa gave him the car and he loves it so were rebuilding it. If you have some special attachment to the car then keep it, if not then just sell it and get back in the game when you have the time and cash.

So a couple months ago i picked up a 99' Civic DX with a b20z2 swap and an LS tranny. The car was basically built from the ground up after a theft recovery. GSR front brake conversion, tougher front axle from some other honda (?) , shaved exterior and i beleive a GSR ECU. Theses are just a couple things from a truly exhaustive list that was described to me upon purchase.

Anyhow, 3 months later i took her to a trusted mechanic and upon a compression test we discovered i have no compression whatsoever in my 3rd cylinder..
So now im faced with a dilemma, Id love to keep the car as its a beauty to drive (even with only 3 cylinders) but due to me being a student i dont exactly have the means to afford a rebuild or swap..:???:
The question is, will my baby pull me to school for another month til i save up for a swap? or should i just sell the damn thing and start from scratch??

ALSO, if i hold off for a swap whats a good budget VTEC motor that i can pop in there for under $2k? (motor only/ labour) prefferably not a D series.. lol

Any advice is greatly appreciated! =)

Heres a shot of the whip, in case it may have peaked someones curiosity.;)

have you done a leakdown test to find out why the motor is not making compression? it could just be a valve - if this is the case replace the valve or get a vtec head for it. fixing this might be easier than you think...

my B20B had the same issue, lost compression in cyl 1. did a leakdown test, found out there was a leak through the exhaust valves. pulled the head off, found out one of the valves was cracked and had a chip missing. replaced both valves and now it runs great. i think all in all costed me about $150 for parts and tools... and only a weekend of my time
