My Honda has 333K miles on it and it still runs like new EXCEPT for the idle racing (2-3K guess) at cold starts
below 45 degrees. I have always had this problem but now worry because of the car's high mileage and unnecessary stress on the engine valves, bearings, timing belt, etc. .When it races at this cold temp you can hear the valves clatter and other ominous engine noises.
After about a minute or so idle slowly slows down to a more reasonable level and the ominous noises quickly go away. Idle is not rough or irregular but TOO FAST WHEN COLD!
My mechanic (who is very competent) says the cold idle is factory set and nothing can be done about
Is there any workaround.? Again, I have had this problem since the car was new, but it seems to race at a higher rpm then ever lately.

PS I don't drive the Honda when the salt spreaders are out.
