exhaust pipe coupler help

I have a 99 dx with some sort of nice cat back exhaust. This was put on near a decade ago and now the 1.5"-2.25" coupler flanges where a test pipe would go is rusted about a quarter inch or so (where the stock spring flange thing is). Makes the exhaust extremely loud now. My question is how do I repair this? I was thinking about just going to auto store and getting one of those coupler that would fit over the 1.5 stock downpipe and expand to the 2.25 aftermarket pipe. Would this be ok?

a coupler probably wont work because the pipes will not go all the way into the coupler so the exhaust will be pushed back..if you can vision that..
