So I was moving some files from my 500gb external hard drive today and it froze mid process. I waited for about 10 minutes, put a fan on it, as it has been pretty warm lately, and came back to find it was still frozen. I ejected it with no success, which then closed my entire OS down, restarted, plugged in, powered on, and now it doesn't even show up anywhere. I took it all apart to make sure the connections were all good and even took alot of the casing off to make sure heat could escape better and still, to no avail, I can't access any of my almost 500gb worth of files. What do I do from here?

That's what you get for using a Mac!!!

Check and see if it will show up in Terminal

type diskutil list
Look for the title you gave it. If that doesn't show up, try and find a recovery tool for mac online and see if that will find it and extract and data. Otherwise, I dunno.

Thanks, I'll try that. I just outbid some jackass in nyc for a laCie 1tb external for like $65 on ebay. Hopefully that one won't get dominated.

Did a little searching online, DiskWarrior might be able to help you. I doubt its free, but thats why we have SerialBox. Try that out.

edit: Also read the Lacie's are none for just dying, ie; power supply failure or enclosure failure. heads up

Yah it appears that no such external is free of defects. I just have all of my 'legal & free' movies on this external. Almost 500gb worth. I will check into diskwarrior. Thanks Dennis.

diskwarrior is a cool program, but it couldn't get my hd to start spinning again. Lol. I'm just gonna have to take the loss and start over again. Luckily I still have all my music, just not my movies anymore.
