Front speaker install '98 Civic

I had some problems installing my Infinity 6022si's in the front door. They came with a plastic and a metal install ring but both of these are too large to fit in the existing hole. The screws for the speakes line up in 2 of the 4 positions so I ended up 'screwing' them into the plastic. They barely seat in the plastic and I am not happy with this.

Is is necessary to modify the hole for the install rings to fit? Is there a better way, or a least another way??

i wouldnt start hacking the door up.
what about selling your speakers n gettin some that are the right size for the hole?
just a suggestion??????????

or attach some sort of ring behind plastic so they sit an hold better? and give more depth to screw into?????
