gauge cluster question

I just swapped a 99 civic cluster with tach into a 96 civic. The 99 cluster has the low fuel warning light. Will it work with the 96 wiring? I thought I would ask instead of driving in circles till I run out of gas to find out.

I did this as well, except mine is a 99 CR-V cluster in a 96 Civic, and so far I've never gotten a fuel light, but then again I don't know this car well enough so once it gets on the line for E, I put fuel in.

Drive until you sputter and die? Just carry a gallon of gas to get you to a station.

^^ wow that's a pretty stupid idea.. sputter until you die? perfect example of fuel pump abuse and risk of engine detonation

instead, try this. fill up your gas tank (until the pump handle clicks off). theoretically that should be 11.9 gallons in your tank for a 6th gen civic. then reset your trip odometer to [000] miles. drive around for a few days, maybe a week, or at least til your gauge reads about half to a quarter tank or so. go back to the gas station and fill up again (til the pump clicks off again). look at the pump and take note of the exact gallons of gas you just pumped. now look at your trip odometer. then do some simple math:

miles driven divided by gallons pumped = average MPG's
i.e.150Mi / 6Ga = 25 MPG

now you know your typical gas mileage for your car. since you know your tank holds 11.9 gallons you can safely assume to get at least 300 miles per tank (if your MPG is 25). everytime you pump gas remember to fill up the tank fully and reset your trip odometer. you will now have a very accurate mileage countdown until you need to pump more gas

:thumbs up

Your 96 Civic cluster also should have had a low fuel warning light. So yes, it will also work in the 99 cluster.

My 96 cluster didn't have the low fuel indicator or the winsheild washer fluid indicator.

Lol. Yeah, I wasn't serious about sputtering and dying. They say not to go very far below 1/4 take to save your fuel pump.

Still curious if the bulb will light up on mine or his. I know my fuel ecenomy and reset my trip ODO every time I put fuel in, but it'd still be nice to have that little backup.
