Getting wire through the firewall (99 Si)

Alright, I'm trying to run 8 guage wire through the passenger side firewall on my 99 Si. I have the glove box removed so I can see the rubber gromet from the inside. However, for the life of me, I cannot find the other side of the hole in the engine bay. I removed the battery and the plastic thing its sitting in. I hear people talking abuot having to remove the battery tray, is it that plastic thing I removed? Am I missing the obvious or do i need to take something else out to get to it?

Also, from the inside, im trying to poke a hole in the rubber, but it seems like it just dissapears after i pull the knife back out. Is there a better way to do this.

Thanks

you either have to drill or i found the drain tube for the vent system and ran it through there w/ 8 gauge also, pull the carpet and look behind the vent box and you'll see the tube, what i did was take all that out then ran the wire then put it back in

what are you running of of 8 ga wire?

anyway, like he said, just drill, but remember to check both sides of the drill location....

a 2 channel amp. I actually have two 8 guage wires going to two 2 channel amps.

A friend did the first amp a while ago, and now I'm putting in a 2nd myself

wait, you already have one in there w/ power wire ran??

then why run another wire. use a distribution block. as long as ur not exceeding around 1k watts between the two amps and are using a quality 8 gauge wire you will have no problems.

btw, if you havent already, buy a capacitor as well

????????????????????????????????????????????

8 gauge is good for systems up 500 watts. And definately DO NOT PUT A CAP ON 8 GAUGE

4 gauge is what you want to run for 1000 watts. And 8 gauge with a cap is not a good idea.

sry sir. ive seen 8 gauge safely handle 1000 watt systems. like i said, a QUALITY wire. and as far as "no capacitor" please explain that. i ran that set up for over a year and never, ever, ever ever ever ever had a SINGLE problem, and the wires never got warm even powering a 1000D memphis mono amp. same goes for my buddies rockford set up with somewhere around a 801s or sum s**t bridged for over THREE years

you DO NOT HAVE TO DRILL if you look under the battery tray where you main wire harness go to is where you can run it dont' listen to these guys theres a way to run it i would take a picture of it if you really want too all you have to do is slice the rubber gromet and the 8G will fit thats how i did it and thats how everyone who has a 6gen did it that i know of. what you do is take two little number 10 bolts out pull the main wire harness the one that goes to your ecy and then you can slice and push the wire tru

Oh god why do I even bother

Im glad you put a memphis 1000d and really thought it was pushing 1000 watts. With 8 gauge you were probably hitting the 600 mark

Total RMS
Power (watts) Distance
4 feet 8 feet 12 feet 16 feet 20 feet
100 10 gauge 10 gauge 8 gauge 8 gauge 4 gauge
200 10 gauge 8 gauge 8 gauge 4 gauge 4 gauge
400 8 gauge 8 gauge 4 gauge 4 gauge 4 gauge
600 8 gauge 4 gauge 4 gauge 4 gauge 4 gauge
800 4 gauge 4 gauge 4 gauge 2 gauge 2 gauge
1000 4 gauge 4 gauge 2 gauge 2 gauge 2 gauge
1400 4 gauge 2 gauge 2 gauge 2 gauge 2 gauge

the cap was doing almost next to nothing for that amp. The wire is too thin to push the needed amperage through

so on a Memphis ST-1000 you should have been running at least a 2 gauge minimum 4 gauge to get anywhere close to 1000 watts rms

you're absolutely correct. i sware its impossible to say "this is what i had, this is what i experienced" without someone calling bullshit on this board. im sry to question your infinite wisdom your holyness, i will not do it anymore

Its nothing to do with being correct. I guarantee on a 80 amp draw (which is what the ST-1000 consumes) I can find discolored burn marks on an 8 gauge wire running that load overtime. If you are going to own an amp that can push that much power (and a very nice amp) why would you not do it justice and give it the power it deserves, When you underfeed an amp you run the chance of overheating the power supply and blowing the amp.
I know wire is expensive now a days but why not fork over the extra money and do it right

i was trying to help him to not have to run a larger wire or two wires as he was. i would like to know what amps out there can actually push the wattage it says it does. very few brands out there can do it and do it everytime. rockford is good for LOUD, but the SQ is not there, JL is just overpriced... memphis IMO is the best bang for the buck. lower amp draw but more power and damn good SQ.

if you cant tell, im hooked up memphis

Memphis is an awsome company. I dont know why more people dont run it. I used the ST-1000 on 4 memphis pr-154 fifteens in my blazer for a while. The f**king amp is awsome

Woah, a lot of replies.

Alright, I'm kind of new at this car audio stuff, but heres the deal.

I have a line in source (its a miniATX computer that goes sound card-->Y cable-->RCA). Thats going into the headunit input. Then I bought a Pioneer 2 channel 760W amp off ebay. My friend was wiring it up and said basically since its a 2 channel amp, I can only power the back two speakers, so I bought a 2nd 2 channel amp (same brand and Wattage) to power the front speakers. And since im Running 2 amps, I thought that 8 guage wouldnt be enought for both of them, so Im running two 8 guage wires.

I'm not using any subs right now.

typically as long as you dont bridge the amp, running 2 ohms to each channel is fine... im guessing you have aftermarket 4 ohm speakers and if you run the rears to 1 channel in parallel and the fronts to the other channel in parallel, you will then have 2 ohms going to each channel thus giving you a safe load on the amp and dont have to worry about blowing it. however it is a pioneer amp, and well, i wont get into my opinion on their amps. i hope your speakers can handle that 760 watt amp tho. i would suggest upgrading to a 4 gauge power and ground wire, not running TWO 8 gauge wires. jeez been so long since ive done this stuff
