Help an audio noob - what necessary cables do I need for my new sub/amp?

I'm an audio noob, so I have a quick question.

Just bought a simple used sub/amp combo off craigslist - and I need to buy the appropriate wires.

No flaming, just looking for advice on what I need to hook the sub/amp up to the deck/battery

Are there basic installation packs you can pick up at car audio stores or best buy? My friend knows how to install.. I just need the goods.

Yes. And it depends on how much power your amp is drawing. If you're only running like 300RMS or something, 8 gauge is fine. But anything more than that it would be best to go with 4 gauge.

I appreciate the info.. this is a simple system.. one 12" Pioneer with a Alpine amp @ 140 RMS

Understanding that the lower the RMS the higher the gauge number, should I use 8 or 10 gauge?

Seems to me like it doesn't matter whether I use 8 or 10 gauge with a system only pulling 140 RMS

I guess I'll go with 10 gauge *shrug*

I would strongly suggest 8 in this case, again, it's not alot of power, but it's better to be a little thicker than too small a gauge and choke out your amp. 8 and 10 gauge kits are pretty close in price.....

outline

I pretty much drew an outline of how to hook everything up for you. This is the setup I use right now.If you plan on running some big wattage consider adding a deep cycle battery to the rear

you should use a 4awg or lower setup, make sure you have a fuse holder near the battery. Use 8awg from the amp to the subs, consider using a capacitor stops the lights from dimming. you can waste your time though with a smaller setup if you want.

^ ^ ^ I wouldn't suggest additional batteries, they always introduce a world of problems that you don't need, often doing more hurt than help. Yes, a deep cycle battery under the hood and a stiffening capacitor may help larger systems. However, for what you are doing they are unnecessary. GL.

You CAN use heavier gauge wire and it will do no harm. I highly recommend it incase you ever go with a bigger set up. If you want instructions on how to do it yourself tell me and ill give you a step by step on installing the system. I learned how to isntall my own radios, speakers, subs, and amps through people on forums so I dont mind passing it on to others.

I have 4ga for my 10" sub btw.
