help! key stuck in ignition

so i recently got a new copy made for my key on my 98 civic and the car started fine but when it was time to take out the key the key wouldnt turn back to lock and now my key is stuck in my ignition.i guess i gotta bad key made. now i wanna know if i need to change the whole ignition starter or just the ignition lock? thanks for the help

Is the car automatic? If so is the car fully in park with the button on the shifter fully out? I had this problem when my shifter button stuck in a little.

yes the car is auto and i tried doing that already but it doesnt seen to work. im pretty sure its the key.

hmm doesn't make sense why the key would get stuck just by being a different key. if it went in it should come out,

have you tried moving the steering wheel back and forth?

this happened once to me at the locksmith, all they did was grab it with pliers and wiggle which gently pulling and it came out.

If the shift knob or button is messed up it can do it. I would take the shift knob off and make sure its fully in park before doing anything else.

Make sure you exhaust all options before pulling the ignition apart.

1. If the steering wheel is locked, pull it towards the direction it moves, hold it, while trying to wiggle the key free.
2. Remember to push the key in before turning it back to the original position.

sometime the new key didnt get file smooth and the rough edges will make it hard to take out...

try everything above..

i've had this happen in my hatch before, i ended up ordering a new key tumbler. It sucked trying to leave work and having a stuck key that wouldn't come out or start the car. I pretty much had to steal my car to get home...
