I have a buddy that has a 98 civic with a 1.6 (that's all I know at this point ) it has 105 pounds of compression fire an inch long and won't start not even with starting fluid. It's at a mechanic shop next to my house rite now and they are done twitch it don't want to invest a bunch of money into it and have more in the car than what it's worth so they stopped my buddy told me if I can get it running I can have it after he gets a new car in June and I need a good work car so my question to everyone is. Is that enough compression and or could it have jumped time I'm not afraid to tear into it and spend my time and money fixing it all help is greatly appreciated

In the future, please make a thread title that reflects what it is you are asking. Most people just pass on by a title like this.

To answer the first question, no that is no where near enough compression. I believe the minimum from Honda is 135 and they can't have more than a 15% difference between them.

It won't fire because the compression is too far below minimum spec. 6th gen D-series motors are cheap as hell. You could buy a new complete same block and drop it in for nothing. It is very popular to upgrade the motors in these to a bigger motor and a LOT that do are almost giving away their old d-series motors.

Sweet thanks I kinda figured it wasn't enough compression so now can I put a new head on or do I need a complete motor or rebuild the old or what

It totally depends on why it lost compression. If it were me, I would scan craigslist and find that guy that is getting rid of his because he is tired of looking at it. They are out there, they always are. Just scanned my local craigslist and there is a d16y8 for $500. That is the first and only one I clicked on, it was like 5 down from the top. There are full rebuilt ones on there for $1000. You could find a full block that would just be drop in for ~$300 probably. Just have to do some digging. I don't know what motor is in that so I can't specify for sure.

Or the other option is once you get the car, pull the engine and send it off for a rebuild.

then enjoy another 200k miles of slowness and MPGs and all it cost was a rebuild.

Tell me where it is. Ill send a truck to pick it up if you dont want it

At the very LEAST motor, trans, and ecu. Please do a search on a b18 swap into a 6th gen civic. It's been documented in very much length on here as well as just about every other honda forum available.

yea man..

these cars are 20+ years old.. Every square inch of a civic has been covered at some point. Just requires a little finesse on the searching
