Hi guys! New member, just bought my first car =^.^=

Hello everyone, my name is kat and I just recently took the leap and bought my first car, a 2004 civic dx (which I am finding much trickier to drive than the kia my mother recently taught me to drive stick on, for some reason it seems like I'm constantly either spinning the tires or stalling out, or at least I was the one day I drove it - it's currently in the shop getting a new exhaust manifold and a driver's door lock so that it'll hopefully pass it's maryland inspection). I've come across this site a few times recently while searching for information on some things I've been thinking of attempting (I know very little about cars and have never done any work on one but I am interested in learning, and maybe even trying my hand at a few simple things).

The things I've been considering are as follows:

I'd like to try and put a tachometer in (or maybe switch out the instrument panel with one from a trim level that has a tach, really whichever would be easier). Obviously it's not necessary (as the previous owner put it, when it sounds angry, shift it) but as I am totally new to driving a standard transmission I feel like it could be helpful for me, particularly for downshifting. There were a couple tutorials on this on here that were actually how I found this site to begin with.

The second issue is the stereo. It has an aftermarket stereo installed (although I've got the original one sitting in my trunk), which has all the features I'm interested in having, the only problem being that most of these features don't work. The radio doesn't work, the usb part charges my phone but will not play sound, I haven't actually tried the auxiliary connector as I don't have a cable for it, and the cd player plays cds but none of the buttons function so I can't skip songs, and finally the volume is stuck on one setting that's too loud for driving around the neighborhood but too quiet for the highway. I tried to check the fuse but I couldn't pull the damn thing out at the awkward angle I was at (even though I kind of doubt that that's the problem) :/ I might get lazy with this one though and just get a new one at best buy and just have them install it, I'm not sure yet. I was wondering if it's actually possible to somehow fix the one I have though, although I couldn't find anything when I googled it.

The final thing was the non functioning drivers side door lock, but I just went ahead and had the shop take care of that when I stuck it in for an oil change and inspection.

I've also considered making an attempt at doing some bigger things down the road, mainly the fact that it's got a little under 119,000 miles on it and it's still on the original clutch (even after the original owner taught both his daughters to drive on it, one of whom took over two months to get the hang of it which I would think would be a lot of wear and tear on it) and while it still has some life left in it I'm thinking that might be something that will need to be taken care of at some point. I'm sure this isn't the place to start my attempt at doing my own mechanics, but I'm hoping that maybe one day I'll get there and that I'll be able to get some good advice from the community on here.

Anyway, sorry for the essay =)

Also, I know you guys love pictures so here's an attempt at one (idk if it'll actually show up haha)

Hope everyone's having a great day!

Welcome. Here's a bunny :bunny2:

Pic worked, get more!

Get a tech thread going in the appropriate section with the appropriate details. We love details almost as much as we love photos.

Pantyraid, love it.

Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the site! Like wreckless said, feel free to create a thread for any of your technical questions, after searching of course. 119k miles is pretty low for these cars. They often run into the 300k realm and higher. My last civic personally had 260k miles before I totaled it out hitting a deer.

Yeah when I found it I was pretty surprised since prior to that about the lowest mileage one I found was around 160k (I guess craigslist is pretty hit or miss), it was lucky as hell too cause the guy I bought it from literally moved to switzerland two days later and the person who test drove it before me (well, before my boyfriend anyway haha, I didn't want to somehow ruin a clutch on a car I didn't own and I wouldn't have been able to tell if there were any issues anyway) wanted to buy it but lucky for me he was a total cheapass (it was already almost 1000 under blue book, it was the cheapest one on craigslist at the time and the lowest mileage, and the guy went down $200 more for me without me even asking so he must have been REALLY lowballing).

Now I just have to hope nobody notices the two tiny chips in the windshield, and then he'll be all ready to go.

Then I can do some washing, I'm hoping that whole toothpaste trick works for the headlights, and I might try using nail polish on a few of the more noticeable scratches, I'd never even thought of that till I saw someone else talking about it the other night.

Can't take any new pictures as he's still in the shop but here's a couple other ones that I took before I took it in

Thanks for the warm welcome (and the bunny) <3

Toothpaste can work on headlights, just find one that is abrasive (has grit). Another alternative is a good rubbing compound. Meguiar's ultimate compound worked great for me and they sell it at Walmart.

I would steer clear of the nail polish on the car. You can find some touch up paint matched to your color code for your paint and it will work much better. =)

I used PlastX on my headlights, came out great. I'd also say look for touch up paint at the local car parts store instead of nail polish. You can find your color code inside the driver side door jam and Google it if you want to find the official name.

I agree with these 2. Leave the nail polish to your nails. It wasn't made for a vehicle and I have never seen one actually work to where it wasn't obvious that the owner used nail polish instead of actual vehicle paint. They never match and are the wrong texture plus the metallics aren't anywhere close.

A bunch of companies make kits that are for restoring headlights and can be purchased anywhere from auto parts stores, to walmart, and any other place that sells car stuff. You could also buy them online; amazon has some good prices and the shipping is fast. The good ones come with everything needed and do an excellent job. I have used the 3m one, one made by Meguires, and another by mother's polish. They are all pretty equivalent and do a great job because that is what they were made for. Toothpaste is for your teeth, let the car stuff be handled by actual car products. :thumbs up

Do like wreckless said and start threads in the proper sections. I would recommend starting a build thread or a show your ride thread so you could get the proper suggestions. Most members don't respond to this section as it is only for introductions for new members to let us know who they are and say hello and not for questions or discussion.

Nice, thanks for all the advice guys, you're all so helpful =) - <3
^ that's supposed to be a smiling face informing you all of its love for you, not happy face minus love. Just to clarify.

Now to get franklin jr back from the shop so I can get him looking as good as the day he came off the lot

Gotta look good while I'm spinning my wheels and stalling haha
