Honda civic 97 gas fumes snell after turning off engine

Hi. I have a 97 civic vti at. After i turn off the engine, i smell some gas fumes in the fuel tank door but goes away after a few mins. No smell in the bottom of the car. Is this to worry about? I just changed my tranny assembly a few weeks agi

Are you overfilling the gas tank?

The gas cap may be leaking and needs replacing.

Just checked my gas cap and upon opening the cap, i can feel the gas fumes coming out like opening a bottle of soda so i guess my cap does not have any leaks?

Drove the car again today. I noticed that there are no/very minimal fumes when driving just 2 miles. You can smell the fumes by sniffing the openings of the gas door. Is there a DIY method to test the fuel cap? Also what is the correct way of closing the fuel cap for a honda civic 97?
