how do i know if its blown

ok i need your help on this one. .i just got 15" L7 for free. the guy i got it from told me that it got really hot in his car and it smelled bad. is there a way i can tell the condition of the sub from the outside. i guess what im asking is what can i do myself to find out whats up with this

Well... I've mentioned in a previous thread that Subwoofers tend to need a power source. Usually a amplifier. Hook up one and one together. ( I'm assuming that subwoofer is produced by Kicker. So you'll more than likely need a fairly decent amp ) and really pay attention to the following.

1. Sound quality of the sub.
2. Any major pieces of the subwoofer vibrating so bad it's causing distortion.
3. and any funny , something smells like it's burning smell.

These may be indications of a blown subwoofer.

Regardless of the fact.. free is free.

The simplest test you can do is simply push on the cone with your hand, sometimes a blown sub will freeze up. It is possible to heat up and smell electronics before "blowing" them. Be careful hooking it up though, if it seems blown, shut down the system immediately, a blown sub can damage an amp.

thanks for the help...i know the easieast way is to hoook them up and find out but i wanted to see if i can do theat before i have power running to them. but o well
