Okay, so with 2+ years of studying different aspects of boosting and turbochargning an engine, I have a decent sum of "book knowledge", however my hands-on experience is very limited. I have had several turbos pass through my hands and have checked the shaft play and spin on them, but have never seen any of those turbos on a car.

So my question is how much should a turbo spin when you spin it with your fingers? The others I have played with seem to spin a couple revolutions with a mild spin, but the one I have now and plan on putting on my car doesnt seem to spin as well as those. I just dont know if its at the point that is ok for that turbo or if it needs a rebuild. it spins very smooth and feels like the bering(s) are in good shape, but just not fast or long with a flick. If the other turbos would spin 5 or 6 rotations, this one does like 2-3. Its a greddy 15g. Anyways, if anyone has any guess I would appreciate some input. Or even better if someone is around the Sacramento area, and has a few minutes some time. (I think a trade for lunch for a few minutes of ones time seems fair, so if your in the area and know about turbos and want a free lunch perhaps) I just dont want to find out once im boosted (in a few weeks) by going hmmm, this turbo should spool at 3000 not 5000... So any guesses guys. Like i said it is nice and smooth when turning, but just cant spin super long. Ohh and it has little shaft play.
thanks

if you run an oil line through the turbo it might help a little, you know, lubrication and such

how well it spins off the car by hand doesnt necessarily dictate how well it will spin on the car with oil flowing through it.

when i shut my car off my gt30r and gt35r i used to run spin for at least a minute after the car is off though lol.

well i was hoping you guys would say that. (without oil its not a fair comparision) This was my hope, since it is very smooth when roatating, but i guess we'll see in a couple weeks. you guys think i should get an oil restrictor (stock greddy 15g and oil line they provide) Ugh I guess i already know the answer to my own question..... I suppose its cheap insurance that can't hurt. Damn Im just cheap though. Any issues with the ebay $20 ones?

I'll be sure to let you guys know.

the ebay ones work just fine^^^ thats what im gonna run......

yea i was thinking the same thing bc ive spun a T25 in a mitsu and it spun faster than my T3 from a saab.....but the T25 has had oil ran thru it recently....while my saab turbo has been sitting around for a while....

turbos shouldnt spin that much if you just give them a twist with your fingers.
actually brand new ones spin very freely. but like mugenkid said it will spin much better after you get oil flowing through it. just make sure the turbine doesnt touch the walls
