How to read the check engine light/O2

I already know the O2 senor on my moms civic has died, and, strange enough, several mechanics have told us her cat has clogged up, but they cant replace the O2 sensors because they are too deep into the engine (this has to be complete bull). Can I use autozone O2 sensors instead of OEMs? How can I check the ECU for more codes, just to see if there is something that I missed? (We know the cause, fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank)

Go to autozone and have them check your ECU codes, they do it for free i think. My primary O2 sensor is dead, I bought a Denso O2 sensor from ebay $54. I ask at the guys in the Honda dealer if I could use a aftermarket O2 sensor and they told me that yes but it wouldn't last long as their genuine..that's some promo stunt haha..they wanted to rip me off by buying one of theirs at almost $200! so I leave it up to you..aftermarket or OEM.

thanks. Oh, and a little tip, platinums suck. No offense, but try either some halos or regular coppers.

Platinum works for me. Better than stock and without the hassle of a iridium.

Well, to each his own. Anyways, thanks. I have mom take it there to confirm what the mechanics are saying. Oh, and how much is it for a new cat? how difficult is it to install? (Please tell me there are ways to do it without welding)

O2 sensor: unplug it then with a wrench take it off. Try to take it when engine is not hot...you could use some wd40 to ease if its hard.

where are the O2 sensors? How can I tell which one needs replaced? Do I need any special tools? What about the cat, where do I find a cheap bolt on that is at least OEM spec?

-EDIT-
This car is a hatchback, but I don't know the details on it yet. Unfortunatly, it appears that the cat may be part of the exhaust manifold. If so, then it will cost about $460! She can't afford that! If this is the case, and I say this because I base this on research online and not the actual vehicle VIN or anything, then is there a way to install another cat without welding for around $100? Her car burns gas like crazy, and she just paid for a relpacement clutch ($400, caused by her riding the clutch due to a knee injury.) The cheaper I can do this, the better. It just eats up gas so bad and the clogged cat and bad O2 sensor isn't helping things any.

Sounds like you might want to look on e-bay and see what you can com up with. There might be a header and cat combo on there, you never know. I know a header is not what you asked about, but as it seems your moms current set up is going to cost a grip. It might be best to check around at other shops in your area!

Ok, I now have her VIN number. Any info on how to decode it to determine her current emissions setup?
