IACV problems

I recently swapped in a b18b into my 94 cx hatchback and every time i have a cold start up it takes the motor a while to finally reach normal idle. Otherwise it surges up and down close to the point of stalling out then recovers again.

The coolant temp sensor clip on the engine harness is missing.

Not sure how that would effect idle but i believe the valve opens and closes based on coolant temps. Not sure if it is coolant temp or thermostat driven.

I have tried cleaning the iacv and the fitv but with no avail.

CEL is on for the coolant temp sensor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,

Tyler

Sounds like you know what the problem is, how come you don't just replace the coolant temp sensor clip?

I tried with a D-series clip but didn't solder it or anything just kinda clamped it together.

CEL didn't go away.

Unsure as to how to reset it, i believe it is just a fuse removal.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tyler

Your thread title should be "ECT sensor problem". First solder the wires on the plug properly and then test the resistance of the ECT sensor to see if it is bad.

How might i test the resistance?

What does soldering properly consist of?

Certain type of wire mandatory?

Thanks for the help,

Right after I got off I went down to the garage I work on my car at.

Popped the hood. Heated up the soldering iron.

Took off the existing connections that didn't work and soldered the wires together.

Started it up and light was still on.

Just came out to my car start it up and boom no check engine light

I think i need a new IACV though still bogs but for some reason no where near as bad

Thanks RonJ,

Tyler

Why do you think that a coolant temp sensor code means that the IACV is bad? Code 6 is still thrown, right? Did you measure resistance across the two sensor terminals?

I am assuming the IACV is bad due to the really crappy idle.

I know the IACV is coolant temperature based just not sure if it is through the Coolant temp sensor or through thermostat that adjusts the way it effects idle.

Still have to get my car back over to the shop in order check the resistance

What is the CEL code? If it's for the ECT sensor, then troubleshoot the ECT sensor and not the IACV.

The ECU controls the IACV and idle speed through inputs from many sensors including the ECT sensor.
