ok so i have my d16y8 all hopped up on steroids(it has a turbo). but im scared that its gonna make my engine blow up, i dont know how much power my motor can handle before it just says "f**k you jeff" and explodes. im wonderin what i need to do to make it safer to run a turbo with high boost, and not have it blow up after a few months. would it just be easier to buy a b18, because i know they can handle the hp better than the d16y8. im lookin for the cheapest way to keep my motor intact and in working order. im guessin that this will save me a lot of time and money in the long run. let me know what i need to do.
thanks-jeff

a D16y8 in good shape on stock internal should be able to handle 6-7 psi. anything above that and you are asking for trouble. from what i have heard, 6-7 psi is good for around the 160hp range(i could be off, someone correct me if i am). if you want more boost than that, you will have to build up the internals.

the same should hold true for a b18 tho. 6-7 psi on stock internals...the difference is that B18's start out at that 160(depending on which exact engine you are thinking) then boost will prolly put you to the 200-210 range(again, really big guesses on my part).

Higher octane gas will be able to sustain a higher compression ratio and thus higher boost. Also make sure you are using an intercooler, the colder the air once again the higher you can boost safely.

yeah ur pretty much correct... i think u should just get a B18 most likely B18C1 ... they have VTEC and stuff and are a better engine overall than urs right now... and if u strengthen ur internals... then u can run hella boost and feal ALOT of power

i would suggest you go to turbod16.com =)

anyway, like everyone else said, keep it safe and don't boost over 7psi.... you'll be fine on stock internals as long as you don't up the boost.

what's your turbo setup? i'm curious.

as to building the engine, rods are usually the first to go, so that would be 1st priority in replacing. it would help u greatly (in terms of labour) if you upgrade ur cylinders at the same time. sleeving your block is probably going to be one of the biggest aids (no, not like the syndrome) your engine can get for boost.

What's managing your fuel? Hopefully you have a good fuel management system (A.K.A. Standalone fuel management) It might (or might not) allow you to run a tad bit more boost, but it'll protect you from blowing up your engine before it should. One good boost spike on an incorrectly tuned engine and you can be kissing that D16 bye bye.

standalone fuel management is awful expensive... however it's amazing what having a good fuel map can do.... 200whp @ 6psi on a d16 is entirely possible.

i have a friend running 9lbs daily on a stock 92 si motor. now, he only has a fmu and missing link, which is NOT the fuel management you want. go with a apexi safc and youll bee all set runing the hack. you motor can easily run 200whp with the apexi fuel management. you should be fine, dont worry. take maintainece seriously and stay on top of your fuel and oil pressure.

as long as you have good fuel management and pressure you should be fine....dont worry man. ive seen stock internal d16 motors take 250whp.

just get a b18 and boost it. that would be a much better motor to do it to

Apexi SAFC and get a whiz to tune it for you and you will be fine. Maintenance is key check your plugs keep a clean fuel filter and change you oil like every 2500 hundred or so with good synthetic oil. Let the car warm up in cold weather before letting the boost fly.

v-afc might be more handy for his needs

yes get a vafc. Great for turbo apps. Hell, they are great no matter what. Also I highly recommend doing some fuel system upgrades. IE: Fuel Rail, fuel pump, and bigger injectors. Even at low PSi fuel is everything. You HAVE to know you are getting enough.

you WILL need the larger injectors if you're doing the v-afc hack as your fuel management

you dont need a fuel rail, yours is fine. but yes a 255 fuel pump, 450cc injectors, vafc w/ hack, intercooler, colder plugs, higher octane gas, and good TUNING!! that will help your motor live. also, the d16 can take hp very well, its just that it doesnt start with alot of hp to begin is why you dont see huge ass power numbers from them...plus they only have one cam.

yep... and if u plan to start building up your internals... i recommend u start with rods... and cylinders since you're doing the rods anyway...
