Instrument Panel back light went dark

Ok, I just replaced my battery so I'm a little concerned about this new problem. I drove the car this morning for the first time since the battery change (3 a.m.-ish), and all of a sudden the backlight to the instrument panel goes dark. I'm hoping it's a minor problem, but would like to know where to start. How should I go about diagnosing this issue?

Sometimes it will be on right after startup (usually if it's been sitting for a day), but won't last long.

Pry the dimmer switch out of the dash and then use a piece of wire to jump the red wire to the black wire in the dimmer switch plug. Do the cluster and climate control lights now work?
