Is a T3/T04 too big?

Some dude from mainstream performance in the ATL told me since im wanting mid 200's that the T3/T04 is bigger than needed and will have some unecessary lag. He said a straight T3 would be better. And moreover, my friend just stuck a T25 on his non-turbo 240SX engine, it spools very fast and hes puttin over 250WHP down. Seems to me like a T25 might be a good way for me to go? The more that i look around on this forum everyone is running a T3/T04 pretty standard. I know i could refer to other threads and look up my CFM but either im too stupid or too lazy. Since i drive this everyday and want to take it easy on the engine, i.e. not boost the crap out of my B18C1 cuz everyone else does,,,, should i go for a smaller turbo?? sorry that took a while to get out.

its too small. doubt it will hold boost all the way to redline. if it were a d series, itd be fine.

Yeah at least give him some answers. T25 would probably max out before your redline so I wouldnt do that one. It's good for d series but most of the b's rev to high for the T25. That small turbo can only make so many cfm's. I dont see the problem with a T3 or T3/T4. Just see what's out there for you and get what you like.

yea i wouldnt choose a T25 for that.........your motor revs higher than that turbo will be able to put out boost.......i would choose a .50 t3t/t4 for your setup........talk to green about his turbo he just bought its a .50 trim....

the t3 is what im going to use to get in the 220's.....ill only be revving to 7.2k though(d series).....im not sure if the t3 will spool for that long on your motor....whats your redline for that motor?

heres what id use in your situation: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/T3-T4-T04E-Turbocharger-A-R-50-stage-3-Turbo-Garret-St_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33742QQihZ008QQitemZ180083943607QQrdZ1

for a GSR motor, i wouldnt go smaller than a t3/t4

a .63/.60 will spool before 5k, and give you a nice kick in the pants

umm...no. 180sx's and silvias never had KA24s in japan, the KA24 NEVER had a turbo option on ANY vehicle...

i had a big long post about why a t3/t04 would be too big and a t3 would be perfect, but it came down to this, and i thought i'd keep it short and sweet.

you are turbo shopping. here are your steps

1 - find a power goal. (sounds like you've got this in the bag)

2 - write that in stone. it's easy to get side tracked and go for more, and end up spending twice what you intended. once you KNOW how much you want, DON'T DEVIATE unless you win the lotto

3 - start researching turbo calculations. there's a good article on this at mrcontrols. it's directed at the toyota 3s-gte (my baby), but all the formulas are the same

4 - pick a compressor that best matches your power goals. and is in a turbo family you want to work with (eg - i went with a T25 family turbo on my celica since a shop i know has a t25 kit i like) try not to oversize too much, the more you overshoot, the less you'll get out of your turbo. THIS is when you start talking to people and asking them what they think. ignore opinions that are far outside of what you've found in your research unless they have some evidence (eg - dyno maps, compressor maps, etc).

5 - find dyno sheets of similarly sized motors with similarly sized turbos (i looked at alot of sr20det dyno sheets, since they like T25 series turbos and the maps were plentiful). how do you like the way they look? do you like where they're making power? pay attention to the details of the turbo (eg - a/r ratios)! this makes all the difference in the world!

6 - start sizing your turbine side based on those sheets. if you want more power up top, go for a larger turbine housing. if you want more low end punch (trust me when i say that this can never be overrated) go for a smaller turbine housing. daily driving, you'll find yourself enjoying the response of a smaller a/r turbine housing than a larger one. you'll get to enjoy your turbo!

7 - post up AGAIN at what you are looking at. get some good feedback.

8 - go for it

9 - share what you've found

so. a good place to look, to be honest, is mr2oc.com it's an mr2 forum, but i don't think there's a group of people on the planet that know more about PROPER turbo sizing. even if you don't post up, grab a membership and search the forums. they have alot of knowledge and more details on turbo sizing. if you do want to ask, i think sizing up a honda would be an interesting challenge for them, and i'm sure they'd enjoy hearing the results. good luck, and let us know how things go.

Hey killer_siller, how do I match up tubo maps to a engine (b18b) at a certain HP goal (400 whp)?
