i had a big long post about why a t3/t04 would be too big and a t3 would be perfect, but it came down to this, and i thought i'd keep it short and sweet.
you are turbo shopping. here are your steps
1 - find a power goal. (sounds like you've got this in the bag)
2 - write that in stone. it's easy to get side tracked and go for more, and end up spending twice what you intended. once you KNOW how much you want, DON'T DEVIATE unless you win the lotto
3 - start researching turbo calculations. there's a good article on this at
mrcontrols. it's directed at the toyota 3s-gte (my baby), but all the formulas are the same
4 - pick a compressor that best matches your power goals. and is in a turbo family you want to work with (eg - i went with a T25 family turbo on my celica since a shop i know has a t25 kit i like) try not to oversize too much, the more you overshoot, the less you'll get out of your turbo. THIS is when you start talking to people and asking them what they think. ignore opinions that are far outside of what you've found in your research unless they have some evidence (eg - dyno maps, compressor maps, etc).
5 - find dyno sheets of similarly sized motors with similarly sized turbos (i looked at alot of sr20det dyno sheets, since they like T25 series turbos and the maps were plentiful). how do you like the way they look? do you like where they're making power? pay attention to the details of the turbo (eg - a/r ratios)! this makes all the difference in the world!
6 - start sizing your turbine side based on those sheets. if you want more power up top, go for a larger turbine housing. if you want more low end punch (trust me when i say that this can never be overrated) go for a smaller turbine housing. daily driving, you'll find yourself enjoying the response of a smaller a/r turbine housing than a larger one. you'll get to enjoy your turbo!
7 - post up AGAIN at what you are looking at. get some good feedback.
8 - go for it
9 - share what you've found
so. a good place to look, to be honest, is mr2oc.com it's an mr2 forum, but i don't think there's a group of people on the planet that know more about PROPER turbo sizing. even if you don't post up, grab a membership and search the forums. they have alot of knowledge and more details on turbo sizing. if you do want to ask, i think sizing up a honda would be an interesting challenge for them, and i'm sure they'd enjoy hearing the results. good luck, and let us know how things go.
