Hi I'm Josh. I drive a 98 Civic EX that is currently all stock (only owned for a couple of months). My first mod is going to be a short ram or CAI. So i wanted to hear everyones opinion about which is the better way to go. I'm leaning toward the short ram. Also some links to some reliable sources for purchasing a aftermarket intake would be nice too

Agreed with ^^^. I had the AEM V2 on my EJ8 before it was totaled and loved it. Most intakes, weather short or full, will be about the same. Even the cheap ones too. Just make sure to get a good filter.

How necessary is it to have a vented hood with a short ram? I've held off getting it because of that

You don't need a vented hood to run a short ram intake. 99% of people that run short ram intakes don't have vented hoods. And IMO, vented hoods are tacky.
