Would just changing the stock air filter with a K&N filter change the sound like a cold intake would?(on 2001 civic manual)

No and if you want the 'sound' of a cold air intake you are talking about short ram intake not cold air as sri is louder than cai.

Ok then scratch off the k &n filter. oh i didn't know that a short ram would produce a louder sound, though I heard it heats up. Overall what you guys think of a aftermartket intakes sound?

i dont see a purpose in getting one simply for sound. but if you get anything, get a sri(short ram). either way, no matter what you do, you will see minimal to no gains from any of them.

^ agrred. You can get name brand SRI for 100 or a little more.Cheaper route is the cheap ebay kit and just buy a good filter for it. The ones that come with the ebay ones are s**t. I dont see why you want one just cause its loud but get the sri cause you will spend alot more on the CAI and it dosent heat up enought to make any difference you wont really notice any power gains with intakes wither it be CAi or SRI.

you will barely hear it also. they really arent loud unless your car is extremely quiet. i use to hear it a little until i got a full exhaust

ohh so not much of a sound improvement?.. I just wanted to get that little "cool" sound you get when you accelerate and shift. I was thinking of a muffler..besides that What could produce this change in sound?

K&N air filters are still good filters, it wouldn't hurt to get one. It may add some horses.
