keep blowing fuse #44

Hey guys hope I can get some help with my demon car (1997 civic hx 5 speed)A month ago I noticed my battery leaking from over heating . So I decided it was just old and replaced it with a new one.problem stayed the same battery heating up . So I went to get a new alternator (not installed ). While driving to work my car dies I hear a poof and smoke coming out of my gauge cluster . I tow the car home try to turn it on it cranks but no go I check fuses notice the em fi fuse under the hood is blown I try to turn it on again instantly blows . So I go through every possible fuse find out 13 and 31 are blown and back up radio I replace them all. i remove the main relay.turn the key it DOESNOT BLOW EMFI FUSE#44 under the hood and begin looking for a short in the main relay connection

I checked every ground ... so my guess now is the white with black stripe.I'm so lost at this point. I'm wanting to just set fire to it
So what I know :
-car cranks over
-replaced fuse 13, 31, 44
-fuse#44 blows on ig2 right away
- if I remove main relay fuse doesn't blow in any ignition position
- I unplugged ecu, main relay , injectors and ivac to test with ohm reader
-#5 on main relay plug shows infinity on ig2
-#7 0n main relay plug shows infinty on all position
-all my fuses are new***

Get yourself a Haynes manual. Chapter 12 page 24 has the diagram you need. Or google it by searching "civic chassis electrical system" or something similar with the year. Good luck

So your blowing the fuses for termin 2, 5 and 7 on the relay. I don't have a good wire diagram to look at right now but are you checking for cont on the relay, with it out? Did you energize the coil while testing for cont? Or are those test you did for 5&7 cont on the wire it?

Ok the I removed the main relay set the ohmmeter to 100x zeroed it out . Put the red wire to the female end and ground to the metal in the dash. I cound out connector 1 on the main relay (fuel pump control) shows an open circuit on all 3 ig points. But from what I read the fuel pump don't matter with the fuse 44. Then last night my genius brother decided to bypass the fuse with a wire to get a start and burnt my ecu so idk if the did it of if it made it worse. So now I'm ordering an ecu and starting over .. will the part burnt on the ecu tell me any clues to what burnt it ?

The component burnt up in your ecu is a diode. It's meant to prevent back flow of current. my guess is it blew from polarity being reversed or over-current/voltage on one side. I can't determine exactly what your problem is but i have a few suggestions

first off It seems like the voltage regulator on your alternator is bad. I would replace this (the alternator unit)before firing it up with new ecu. if you get the alternator tested, take it to multiple places even if the first says it's good. it wouldn't be a bad idea to let the tester know your battery has overheated in the past. if you do fire up your car with the same alternator test it right away. your voltage at the battery should be no more than 14.5v, but more likely ~13.6 with no load at idle.

I would also test your relay using this, or replace the relay. all three related fuses blowing point to a faulty relay (possibly from too much voltage/current) as a possible cause

If 5 and 4 have continuity. you can also remove pins and replace +12v on pin 5 and -12v to pin 3. you should have continuity between pins 6 and 7

If all that passes, it could be a short in one of the wires connected to the relay (wires rubbing, water damage, plug corrosion). to test, unplug your positive battery cable and check for continuity to ground on the positive wires going from the relay to the IACV, Injectors, fuel pump. there should be no continuity on all these wires.

Hope this helps,

Sounds like to me something is messed up with the wiring, does it look like any of it has been spliced, cut off, heat shrink wrapped, etc?

What I would do is start checking the fuse box in the engine bay, make sure the fuse for the ecu is going to the main relay. If someone else touched your car before you had it, there is a chance someone mistook a wire for another wire of the same color. For an example, there are two white wires with black strips. One is thicker then the other.
