Hey, guys...I'm pretty sure cc can help me out with this one so I am back once again with another question.
So my sister has a 98 Civic Coupe DX. Her lights keep flickering. I mean all the lights inside out. Headlights, Dash anything that you can see. I checker her alternator, battery...etc...they all seem fine, So I'm stumped.!! She had an accident recently and the car was repaired. The problem has been happening before the accident but since the accident, it's gotten worst. The lights go dim bright dim bright. So out the out side it seems like ur high beaming someone infront of you. Helppppppp Guys!!

Hmmm.. my '97 EX had the same problem. I brought it to Honda and they couldn't find out what was wrong. Idiots couldn't see the lights flickering at mid-day.. go figure. "Could not replicate customer's problem."

The same is happening to my hatchie '94 when I listen to the loud music - in this case use Capacitor

What is your rpm when idling? Maybe its too low or jumping ? If so then there are a lot of things to chech for example fuel filter, ignition mispositioned, colliding wires (+ / -) etc...

take it back to the place it was repaired. tell them the problem and make them fix it. shops warrenty their work for a certain amount of years. average i seen is 3 years from date of repair. if they wont fix it, tell them to re open the claim or tell the insurance company to re open the claim.

but it sounds like a grounding problem somewhere.

My 1997 ex has the same problem, its not really a problem more of an annoyance. but the answer to your question is here. The Alternator has a bad internal regulator problem. Honda sent out a bulletin in 1998 stating they had a problem with some of the 1997-1998 Civics with this problem. You will have to replace the alternator. Its addressed in Honda Technical Service bulletin 98-029. Just do a google search on that service number and you'll find some sites that have it posted.

I think I've got the same problem with my 98 Civic. When my car is at idle and normal operating temp., my lights go dim and when I step on the gas they brighten up. I've got a volts meter in the car and I can sit there and watch the needle go from 12 to 14 and back as I step on and off the gas. I also noticed my CEL seems to "pulsate" at idle, and if I have a blinker on, the brightness will shift back and forth between the dash lights as the blinker goes on and off.

Any hope at getting Honda to replace the alternator for free since it's faulty? Or would the car still have to be under warranty? Nearly seven years later...
