the actual metal holder thing broke? i don t think any glue would hold it in place..since you prop it open its gonna add weight to it..but maybe it broke cuz you prop the hood up too much and it just got weak..(or you can do what i do when i was installing my turbo kit...pray pray pray pray)

almost everytime. like i said, if i know im going to be home for over an hour and go out later that day, i open the hood and let it cool. i try to keep the engine as cool as possible when not using the car.

i dont see the problem in doing it :what:. extra 5 seconds of work doesnt hurt.

The only cure I know of is to replace the entire hood cable. It's pretty easy; I've done it before. Now I have to do it again PLUS Eran's broke now too.

I'm thinking of getting a new latch though because my latch feels all tigh where it shouldn't. We've tried lubing it, but it doesn't help any. i think the two springs in it might be f**ked up (the one that's suppseod to be tighter is looser and visa versa). I tried bringing it to Honda and they tried setting me up to buy another hood cable before this handle even broke.

These handles apparently break all the time though. I wish I could find one with a metal pull instead but the plastic seems to be well bonded to the metal cable.

yeah previous to this little mishap, it seemed to hold up strong. just by pulling it, it felt strong and seemed like it was molded well. but today, for some odd reason, just as i was pulling it, i had the slightest feeling it was going to break. it just felt like slush when i pulled on it and it pulled away from the tubular part as if the plastic was still in a liquidy form.

how hard is it to replace the whole thing?

It's not very hard to do. Just a pain in the ass. All you should need to make sure to get are new clips for your fender liner (if you have one) and the new cable.

Remove the front bumper,. remove the fender liner enough to reach the cable. Trace where the cable goes from the underside of the middle of the core support to the inside through the firewall and to the clip near the floor.

I can't remember every step to do, but it's really easy. Just take everythign apart as they look like they go together. There are little clearish zip ties that snap onto the core support to hold the cable in place. I think I wrote directions on how to replace the cable in another thread but I can't seem to find it right now.

The cable starts on the passneger side of the latch where it attacthes and exits the latch housing. The cable runs to the passenger side for a couple inches and then loops around to the driver's side. The cable is held in by those small clips to the bottom of the core support. The cable runs to the driver's headlight, goes behind it and then exits into the driver's side fender. It runs along the top edge of the fender and then moves into the interior of the car through a rubber grommet in the firewall. See the image below to see what it looks link on the interior when you remove the panel on the floor.

Here was my car the last tiem I was replacing my cable.

Here is what you'll be working with on the interior of the car:

It's happened to me twice. Keep some pliers or somethign around... Mine sticks like a motherfucker.

Anyway, you need to replace the entire hood cable. Remove the wheelwell trim from the driver's side front. Pop the hood and press all those little white clips on the radiator support down. Remove the front bumper too btw.

Unclip it all around. There's also a bracket near the pedals. Crawl down there and remove the handle end from there. You might have to remove the black cover from the latch on the front of the car and unhook the end of the cable there too. Pull it all out. There's a little black seal that's in between inside and outside of the car that it goes through too. I used a used cable, so I had everything I needed (the clips, seal, blah blah blah) all attached already.

Replace in reverse order. It's really easy, just kind of a pain in the ass.

Since mine's snapped twice I'll be looking to replace it with a custom fabbed METAL handle this time. f**k that flimsy plastic one. Went through two in about three years.

Oh, and incase I wasn't clear....

The cable runs from the middle of the front of your hood, behind the driver headlight, into the wheelwell (against the body behind the wheelwell trim), and into the passenger compartment right behind the fuse box.
NOFX said:
It wasn't very hard. I'm a bad estimate of time though... I only did it once and I guess I expected it to be more difficult than it was. Plus I had to put the bumper back on and go back new clips for it too. :???:

So yeah, buy new trim clips before hand. teh ones for the wheelwell I mean. They will be a pain in the ass to remove more than anythign and might hold you up. It's best to either use a clip remover (go to Autozone, I know they're with the hardware there, they were underneath the hardware at my store, hard to find, no one knew where they were) or just don't care and shread them to s**t.

yeah, on my old ej8, i broke the little handle off as well... i just kept a small pair of pliers in the console for when i needed to open the hood. I think it was a stupid design the way they made it... to the naked eye, it looks sorta like a lever, and not a handle, so try to pull up and back instead of pulling straight out. Thats how my friend broke mine off.

I'd like to get a metal handle made and welded onto the cable instead. I want it to look pretty damn close to stock still though. Like it's supposed to be there.

id rather sacrifice a little look (no one see's that anyway) for some better functionality. I bet you could find some sort of loop or hook at the hardware store that could crimp right on to the cable. With your idea, to get that stock shape/contour the only thing i can think of is sheet metal, and that doesnt seem like a very good idea.
