Looking at an 85

Just wondering what everyone thinks. I know you can't tell much from an ad but thought I'd reach out to those who may know! Story is, it was an older gentleman who bought the car new and had it up til a few years back when it ended up at a Honda dealer. There, an employee bought it an switched the 4 speed auto with a 5 speed auto, that's the only thing that concerns me! Now the son of the guy at the dealership has it. I'm rather excited about getting it, just don't want to be blinded by my own excitement! Take a look and let me know what you think! Thanks in advance!

Personally, no. I would pass.

Because I am bored, here is why:

1) Too old. If I am going to buy a vehicle that old, I am going to buy one that I know will end up making me a profit. Definitely not an outdated 80's slow Honda sedan.

2) Ugly. I have never liked 80's hondas and the color is not very appealing.

3) Slow. Slow. Slow. Slow. Most Hondas are slow, but an 80's sedan with an automatic is molasses slow. Not that these were built to be fast, as they were built for gas mileage but the good mileage doesn't make up for it in this situation. Not for me anyway.

4) Price is way too high. This is, at best a $500-700 car to me.

5) Way outdated and not in a good way. Some outdated cars still hold a following that could net a profit after the car is tuned up and given a little love. This car is and always will be a less than $1000 until it is worth only it's value in scrap.

That being said, if this is your thing and it makes you happy, go for it but for me it definitely isn't worth the money.

That car is in pretty good condition for almost 30 years old! I do think the price is a little high though. Like Cary said, if you're not concerned with getting passed by mopeds or hoverounds, go for it!

He said he'd take a grand for it. I'm just looking for something to drive that's reliable and cheap to own

i would pay $500 tops for that. even thought it's a 'classic' it's not like it's a particularly rare or interesting model.

What's kbb value
KBB is a joke and should never be used to judge value. Especially on an older car. There is a reason why dealerships and insurance companies dont use KBB.

It's useful for selling cars though

I use KBB and NADA and average the two. I know my bank uses NADA which is typically a little lower than KBB from what I've noticed... so because of that I would guess that's probably what other companies use too.

Most companies that we deal with and dealerships use market value to determine. KBB isn't good for selling because it is a generalized best guess and is almost always wrong. I laugh at people that try to bargain with me when selling something and they are trying to use the commercialized sites like KBB. I tell them to go on KBB and buy the car then.

You go off the market around you. In the end, the vehicle (no matter what it is) will only be worth what someone is willing to pay for it regardless of what some site says. KBB can say that this car is worth $3000 even though cut and dry it is only a $500 car to most buyers. Take this thread, most would only pay that $500, yet OP is willing to double that for what ever reason that may be.

Btw, insurance gave me almost twice what KBB and Nada had my civic valued at when it was totaled. They did it right and went off of market value at the time.

I agree that $1500 is too high for this car for a few reasons.

- Its not a sought after Honda model so its in low demand
- The original motor was swapped, so the car lost any "classic" type value it had for being all original.
- Its clearly not in pristine condition, which would be the only way it would merit anything over $1000
- Being an unpopular Civic, any necessary parts will be scarce to obtain, which is not something you want to experience with an old automatic.

Even if it runs extremely well, I just cant justify any purchase price above $800.
