Lousy Idle 1996 Civic Ex 1.6 liter with 5 speed

Hi,

My 1996 Civic EX won't idle properly. In the AM (a cold start), it stalls. Once it is warmed up, it idles too high (1500- 2000 rpm's). I have replaed the cap, rotor, wires, plugs, IAC valve. I tested the Thermo Control Valve and am getting the proper voltage. I bled the coolant system after replacing the IAC. I need to test the IAC voltage: Is it 12 volts for the yellow and red wires?

I am open to any suggestions to fix this problem.

Thanks--

Lousy Idle amended

Hi,

I checked the voltage on the IAC. It is, in fact, a two wire plug: a yellow/black striped wire and a blue/black wire. I get a constant 11 volt reading on the yellow/black wire when I ground it to the block. When I ground it to the blueblack wire, I get no reading: 0 volts. I also get no reading when the ignition is off. When the ignition is off and I touch both wires in the plug, I get a reading of 0.15 volts. Should the IAC be on a constant feed circuit?

Thanks--

I had a similar problem with mine and it was a vacuum leak, make sure to check all your vacuum lines and connections....

I sprayed everything with carb/choke cleaner that I could find where air might be getting in, but I could find no leaks. If it is a vacuum leak, it would have to be on the underside of the throttle body or intake mainfold. Do you know how I could test those places?

Thanks--

I just bought the car. I was desperate for a car. I forget rule #1 when buying a used car: check to see if it has been warmed up before you get there. The car runs at a slightly high idle once it is warmed. I don't know how long it has been running like this at cold idle.
