SANTA ANA -- County prosecutors have charged 53 auto mechanics, including one who appeared on a show on the Speed Channel, with felony insurance fraud.
"Operation Straight Body" consisted of 152 undercover operations at shops throughout Orange County from January to May, Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said Thursday.
Among those arrested was Richard Evans of Huntington Beach Body Works, who was featured on a show on the Speed Channel called "Chop Cut Rebuild" and also appeared on the show "Monster Garage."
Undercover investigators went to auto repairs shops to get estimates, and would ask if damage could be repaired under the same insurance claim even though some of the damage wasn't caused by the same accident. "This prosecution put dishonest operators and anybody thinking about committing fraud on notice," Rackauckas said at a news conference. "I think consumers have the right to know which of the auto repair shops are conducting straight business and which are not."
This is the second such sting operation on insurance fraud this week. On Tuesday, county prosecutors said they charged four chiropractors, an attorney and two office employees in an insurance over-billing scheme.
