My buddie has a turbo d16, with a T3/T4 setup. His car used to run fine, but all of a sudden after 5ooorpm under full throttle from third, it starts to ping. We were wondering why all of a sudden in the last two weeks it started to ping. Spark plugs are gapped properly and are new....also it doesnt to seem to be bad gas. Its just wierd because it suddenly started, and the car has been boosted for a couple years.....

What could be the cause...? Mechanical or electrical...?

fuel or ignition. could be either the tune, the injectors, the ignition, etc.

check the timing belt and make sure it is adjusted properly, check your ignition timing check fuel pump/fuel pressure whats he using for fuel managment if he is using an fmu i would check for vacuum leaks thats all i can think of right now.....

vacuum leaks huh......K we will check....
also is there a way to check if the fuel pump is working correctly...? He has a fmu. Would leaks caus pings under full load...? We are gonna retard the timing a little more, see if it still pings.

What could be up with the ignition...? What should we look for specificaly.....

start small. wires, and rotor. if all are fine, then check the coil (i think some places like autozone can do a full check of the igntion system, many times for free) if all of that stuff is in perfect shape, check the fuel supply- filter, fuel pump, injectors. if all of those also function properly, then its probably a ecu/tuning problem or maybe a wiring problem causing either the fuel or the ignition equipment to not funcition properly.

K....that sounds like a good start...I will take it to my mechanic and have him run tests on those things. The wiring could also be an issue, concidering he just got something instaled that had to do with wiring. Also Im thinking if bad gas is the case, maybe he should fill up his tank (put about only two gallons of 92 today), with better gas....but Im not sure if it takes time for the bad fuel to flush out of the system.

bad fuel is usually just some water in the gas. go to autozone and buy a bottle of gas treatment specifically for removing water. it should only cost a few bucks. get those ignition tests done there while your at it.

you could dump a gallon of Toulene in the gas tank its 114 octane it will bump up the octane of the gas thats in there a few points a gallon is like 10 bucks you can get toulene at paint stores since its a paint thinner but it wont hurt your car its the same stuff they use in the octane boosters you get at autozone....

heres a link:

if you retarded the timing enough and its still doing it you're not getting enough fuel...how many pounds of boost is he running? If you're running too much boost with an fmy youll ping like crazy...too much fp for the stock injectors.

But it has been running perfectly until last week....around 8psi. I heard in the winter, they put something in the gas that lowers the performance quality of fuel...? Im not sure if that has anything to do to it. My mechanic is closed till mon, so until then we are gonna dump 100 octane in there, and see if it still pings. If it still does, I hope the mechanic will know what tests to run to pin point the problem
