Sounds like its your speed sensor. ITs a cable that connects to your tranny.

Does the speedo jump around as well? Or does it start working again if you knock on the cluster?

sounds like a bad VSS... look it up to find where its at, im to lazy to do it for you.

what you will want to do is, disconnect the plug on the VSS and clean the female end of the plug. use baking soda and vinager (not much, just a few drops) and a pick to get into the metal contact area. reconnect the plug after it dries, and see if that worked. if not, replace the VSS.

but it could be a few other things as well, but this is your best bet.;)

Some times its just the cluster, other times its a bad speed sensor, but try to clean your speed sensor contacts first.

The vss is a sensor near the back of the tranny if you're looking at it from the front, its bolted down with one 10mm bolt and it has a harness plugged into the top of it. Should be easy to find.

Whats really weird is i changed out my VSS in mine and it worked for about a week then stopped working and it would jump around for a bit then finally it completely gave out and it wasnt working for about 2 weeks and i was getting pissed because i couldnt crack vtec well my alternator finally gave out and i got a new one put in and the speedometer works perfectly now...and i didnt touch anything else when i was doing the alternater. My guess is it wasnt getting enough voltage or something i dunno.. weird
