so i have a VERY large music collection... some paid for... others not...thats not the discussion here...

well... in 8 years of music collecting on my computers... and on these 5 hard drives... it was very spread out...

well my OS crashed the other day... so it forced me to buy an external HD and to transfer everything to it... which i did...

so i decide to consolidate everything down to one folder..

i do so... now.. there is duplicates and renamed stuff... and misnamed stuff... and ones that dont have names at all... just says track1,2,3,4,5,etc. duplicates of those as well... ill have 10 or so track 1s

id like to eliminate the duplicates.... but since the collection is so large... i cannot handle this task... it would take WEEKS

a quick google search yielded this...

http://www.google.com/search?q=music+duplicates&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

a list of programs that can do this for you... oh look... how convenient!

but i am not wanting to risk my new OS... in downloading some spyware program...

so... i am asking you CC!

do you have experience in this problem? and how did you deal with it? did you use a program? can i use one of those programs?

i hear iTunes will take care of this for you... but i also hear iTunes will recode your music to only be able to play in itunes..

i have NEVER used itunes... EVER... since.. i have never had an ipod...

i have a ZUNE... and the zune software is ok... but wont deal with duplicates.

id also like to break everything down into the proper albums and album names... the zune software handled this pretty good... also got me album art.. but again... wont handle duplicates..

theres also duplicates of the same music... but one is the studio recording..and another will be the live version.. or something like that...

any opinions?

iTunes blows monkey cock. i don't know anything about that other program, but i did have the same problem you had. i consolidated my ~33gb of mp3 music onto one harddrive and it mostly worked. i did end up with about 10 albums that say Unknown Artist and all songs are labeled by track number, but i was able to play them in WMP and it figured out which was which and named them for me.

this probably helps you none. good luck lol

yea right now.... im doing this... manually... UGH!

theres 31GB on my hard drive... and 15GB on the zune

the stuff on the zune has already been gone through...

the zune came with the car i bought... lucky me... preloaded with a bunch of stuff.. .including pics of my car..

so its a matter of sorting through and placing everything in the proper albums and names on my HD.. before it gets added to the zune.

problem is... really its not so much duplicates... but its like... i have the original album... then the same song appears on a greatest hits album... or something like that... thus creating a duplicate. i dont want to remove them from my collection....i just dont want duplicates on the zune.. i think i know how to handle this in the zune software... we will see..

I have a mac and used Idupe but don't think that'll help you.......... GL Man, maybe it's time to trim your collection I mean how often do you listen to ALL that music? I have about80 gigs and that's too much IMO

I'd had to trim music before, if I want it again later I'll re-acquire it.........

ah, yes. i've had this problem before. In my case my os didn't crash, i just had to restore it.
I didn't even know such programs were available, programs that organize your library, awesome.
I highly doubt i'll use one because i do all the organizing manually. It CAN take a long time, but to tell you the truth is doesn't bother me, i like keeping my music folder organized and clean. When i download someting i usually get on top of it quick to organize it and make at the criteria s (gengre, release date, author, contributing artist, album, ect) of that files are what they are supposed to be.

I does take time, but i like i said it doesn't bother me. I do it two ways, either through the folder itself, or through my favorite media player, which is Window's Media Player. and yes the Zune software is nice

when downloading make sure the file(s) are organized or have some sort of order, that can help you alot once its on your hd. so, i recommend you used Windows Media Player, and organize a bit at a time. Specially if you have huge library.
