Hello well to break things down I have a 2000 civic ex and My A/C does not work! It was missing the a/c or serpentine belt and I thought that that was the problem but felt like it wasn't. So I took it to a shop and the mechanic looked at it with me he said I had a bad compressor and showed me how there was a loose bearing he quoted me $600, Haven't really taken it anywhere else. He said he will replace the compressor belt, recharge the entire thing and all that. How do I know if its something less expensive , the fan on driver side works so I'm guessing that could be it? Or could the clutch on it just be bad? PLEASE HELP ITS HOT AF!

Lol, hot indeed. Sounds like he is charging you the same price for labor as the ac compressor price..300. It can be a number of things and my suggestion is that you go somewhere else or do the work yourself (this is a lot more gratifying and useful). A compressor would cost 300 at autozone and if it turns out that your compressor isn't the problem you can always return it for your money back. Is the mechanic offering you that? Because im sure if it wasn't, he would say that you have another problem so that way you pay him a bit more to then fix that and you wouldn't get money back.

I wouldn't rule out the fan, but the first thing you should do is conduct a pressure test for your a/c line to make sure you don't have a leak.

I know that what Ima do just check around and I cant DIY cause I dont have the tools wahh.
Autozone has a Lend-a-Tool service. You can tell them what you need and how long you need it, they will put it in the system and you pay them. Bring them back after the job and they can give you your money back.

Get a second opinion from a different mechanic. The repair price he quoted you sounds reasonable for parts (compressor, receiver/dryer and drive belt), labor and freon. Also check if his work comes with some kind of warranty... should warranty your a/c operation for at least a year to be considered a reputable guy.

Don't attempt to remove your own compressor without taking the car to someone to remove the freon from the a/c system... pulling an a/c line with a freon charge can cause flash freezing of body parts and blindness and is punishable by the EPA with a $10k fine. And then you'll still need to pay someone to vacuum and charge the system for you.
