3 people in my family have Tom toms. I have a garmin nuvi. The general consesus by my whole family is that the garmin nuvi is the best. They wish they had mine. Garmin (to me and my famy) is much easier to operate and much more user friendly.

I would in my opinion buy a Garmin Nav Unit. My brother works for Garmin and most of the customers he deals with on a daily basis are always bitching about TomTom Units and what not. Plus too Garmin usually has there units on sale quite often for a good price. It just all depends on what kind of features you want and how much you are willing to spend on one. For a basic unit a $100 unit is good enough even for me to drive from Kansas City to Anchorage, Alaska.
