New Civic owner..or maybe not, problem with papers.

Hi to everyone, heres my problem, if anybody knows about title and related stuff I need Your HELP!!
So here it goes: few days ago I traded my Eclipse for 96 4 Door Civic, it was a good trade(cause Eclipse wasnt in its best shape) before I checked the Title and Bill of sale (yeah I was dumb enough not to do it right away).
So the way it is - The title is on one name, the Bill of sale is the other name, and the back of the title is all crossed over so that I cannot even see whose name was there. Called the guy I traded with he said that on the bill of sale he put the name of the guy he bought it from, cause he never got to register it..

And I already bought a new clutch and some other small stuff...almast started installing it today..just want to make sure ill be able to register it somehow.

Will go to the DMV on monday...just wanna get some info today...

Get that guy to go with you anywhere you go to do the title work! I had a problem with a guy an it was a headache! If he never transferred the title they might make him pay taxes on the car or some other BS. I had power of attorney on my title an had to pay twice, once to get my name added then once again to get his name off an mine on alone. Don't lose touch with the guy.

Maybe, unless his bill of sale specifies the names of the two parties between which the cars were traded. If so, than the other guy could be identified as responsible for selling stolen property.

Granted, by that same merit, the OP could be branded as purchasing stolen property, but that's something he should really ask an attorney about.

OP, you should really consider talking to an attorney about this before contacting the police. Any solid lawyer should be able to identify the steps you should take in order to reasonably protect yourself in the event you decide to pursue legal action against the other seller--which, frankly, you should, because after all, he did in effect steal your car. In this situation, find out what your options are from someone who is qualified to help you.

"theft by deception" is when you take ownership of something with promises of reimbursement.. most commonly charged when people buy things with bad checks.. BUT I am fairly confident it could apply here as well since the promise of the vehicle was not delivered (due to a bad title).. when I said "report the car stolen" I was implying that you would explain the details.. not just go in there and be like my car was stolen..

Okay I see where you guys are coming from now, makes sense. Im still totally blown away by this though.......When I buy a car, I know the sellers name. All the paperwork is filled out THERE before we hand over the cash. If the other guy doesnt sign over the title, I dont hand over the cash. Simple as that. I always thought this was common sense.......however many people seem to be lacking in this department....
