Hi all,

I am a newly registered member of the site.

I drive a 1996 Honda Civic DX Coupe. The car has been virtually worry free its entire existence except for the exhaust. Just about every 2 years, I need to replace a portion of the system.

I asked my mechanic about this, and he said that he has several customers with the same problem. I've been happy with this mechanic's work, but I think he uses shoddy parts.

Anyone have the same experience with their Civic?

Any suggestions for what I can do to prevent needing repairs every few years?

Thanks.

Thanks

I am from Cleveland.

This is a general question about the integrity of the entire exhaust system. But more specifically, there is a hole that requires the replacement of the cat-back this time.

Well over time exhausts get rusted out and holes form. This is a normal thing. You just replace the exhaust.

They haven't been using Honda manufactured parts, no.

I asked the mechanic about using those, and he said the repair would cost 3x the amount. What he said was $800 for a cat-back replacement.

Do you think OE parts would last longer? And how much longer do you think?

Makes sense. Well it really depends on the material they use. Also does it snow a lot where you live? Because if it does, they're going to be salting the roads A LOT. And salt chews up exhausts. That's why cars have that rep on the east coast.

It does snow a lot here, except this year.

What do you think about stainless steel piping?
Exactly. The salt is probably what's causing it.

And I feel like stainless steel would be better since it is has some sort of polished/coated surface. I have stainless steel and I have zero issues with it.

Okay. So I guess 2 years is normal, which is pathetic. I swear, I've gone through 4 repairs over the last 7 years. I only have 93,000 miles on the car. This will be the 5th repair.

I guess I should have gone with stainless on the first repair. Now that I have over 90,000 miles, who knows how long the car will last.

Well, I'll ask how much it would be to use stainless this time and weigh the benefits.

Thanks.

90k your just breaking it in. If you take care of it, it should last well past 200k and yes stainless steel should solve your problem. Not trying to bash but plz tell me your not like my wifes family? They think once a vehicle hits 100k miles that its junk and they always go and trade it in on something knew. I have slowly been swaying them from that path showing them that just taking good care of it they will last a very long time.

This happened to my car except it all needed to be replaced at once. My new exhaust has a protective coating that prevents rust so you should try that. It will last so much longer and is cheaper than replacing parts all the time.
