Trunk won't lock

Hey guys,

I just got myself a 2000 Honda Civic hatchback DX Special Edition (I'm in Canada). The car looks and drives great. I only have one problem (I searched but I couldn't find what I'm looking for. Maybe I missed a similar thread).

Today, I randomly decided to see if my trunk was locked and I realized it wasn't. When I tried to lock it, the little stick (sorry I don't know the parts name) goes down when I lock the trunk. However, the latch does not move. I can move the latch myself to put it in the closed position, but then I am not able to close the trunk. Pulling the trunk handle makes the latch go in the open position, regardless if the trunk is locked or not.

I removed the plastic cover to see if anything is missing or not connected but I couldn't determine anything being wrong.

So I was wondering if someone had a similar issue previously and knows how to solve it or knows where I can find a DIY. Any help is greatly appreciated and I hope this post will be the first of many for me.

Thanks

By the way, your thread title does not conform to forum rules.

Thanks you for taking the time to write a detailed post, new member. You're in the recent minority but much appreciated.

I think that whatever is supposed to turn the latch when the trunk is being locked/unlocked doesn't work.
When the trunk is "locked" the handle opens the trunk because the latch remains like this. It doesn't close (like in the second picture I did that myself by pushing it with a screwdriver) when I want to lock it.

So right now, when I turn the key to lock the trunk, this moves like it is supposed to.

I don't know if there is something missing here.

Sorry if the pictures are bad. I did the best I could. If I need to retake/take some pictures, let me know.
And of course, thank you for your help and advice.

Maybe the latch is bad. These diagrams may help:
Thanks. I'll try to deassemble it in the morning and see if the latch is broken. Two more questions for tonight. If the latch is bad, will it be super obvious when I take it appart? And secondly, if the latch is bad, how much would a new one cost?

Little update

So the latch actually works fine. And the lock cylinder and cylinder rod work as well.

I think if the car is unlocked, when you press the trunk handle it should release the latch and if the car is locked, something should block that from happening. And for reason xyz, the trunk handle releases the latch regardless if the trunk is locked or not. So is there a missing part? Is a part broken? What could it be?

Again thanks for all the help.

Oh my, HeX, I'm disappointed ;)

Best new member post in a while though, I agree (minus the title)

From Majestic, a whole new part would be like $50 plus shipping but first find out if something is stuck or not engaging properly and can just be readjusted or fixed easily. I had an issue with my 96 hatch where the mechanism that pulled the release back off the latch was bent out of whack and I kinda bent it back to working condition. You're issue sounds a little different though, just saying if it can be fixed without destroying it, why not.

Thanks. I tried to change the title but it only changed my post title (if someone can let me know how to do it or if a mod can do it, it would be appreciated).

Maybe it's just gummed up? Have you tried WD40?
I don't think I'm going to buy a whole new part yet. Like I said in my last post, the latch is fine. It's whatever prevents the handle from releasing the latch that is missing or broken. I don't know what it is (I don't know anyone with a hb civic to compare it with mine). I want to figure out what that part is and then proceed with whatever repairs are needed.

It goes without saying, thank you all for your suggestions.
