New to ClubCivic, but not to Civics

Evening Folks,

I will start with a little about myself. I am a thirty-something in the midwest who is coming to terms with being a family man. I have always owned Hondas out of reliablity. One of my first cars was a '88 4dr civic. Since then I have pretty much always had a Honda in the stable. But as we grow we find different passions and pursuits. I have always been a gearhead and my endeavors have pretty much centered around burning fuel in one shape or another. I have built-up motors and restored a few vehicles (bikes, cars and even a truck). I have raced motocross for the better part of the last two decades. Basically if you can run fuel through it . . . I want one.

Well, I have been dragged into the need to be a responsible adult. The warden has put my spending into a budget. So the dependable, reliable and fun to drive civic has re-entered my life. So our humble 'in-case-sh*t- happens' car has been pulled from under the tarp. Back in '03 I made my 'soon-to-be' wife buy my cousin's '00 Civic EX. At the time it had 33K and was at a family discount. Much to my wife's disappointment it was a five-speed and not really her choice. But it made a great impression and she moved onto a '07 CRV. In the summer of 2007, I drained the fuel tank and tarped the civic till it was needed.

That day has come. Last week I pulled the car around the shop and began to get her 'streetwise' The car is bone stock with the odometer at 126K. I began with a timing belt change and the routine stuff. Then the demons began to spin through my head. This thing is just . . . too stock. So with a little research and a bit of lurking, I stumbled across this forum filled with like-minded civic enthusiasts.

So . . . I begin with a 'fairly' clean slate civic and a budget that reminds me of my college days rocking a '92 civic hatch. I will have questions and I am open to any suggestions.

Sorry for such a long post . . . but I am up thinking of cold air and coilovers.

I'll get a few pics up. But she is really bone stock. Other than a CF shift knob, tint and a few personality marks left by my wife, I believe the car is completely original. (yes, the radio is oem) So far the timing belt is done, new plugs and thermo. Waiting on the wires and distributor/rotor till she gets a good bath and polish under the hood.

The list of necessities remains:
front passenger inner skirt
new front bumper skin, maybe a lip
muffler (stocky rusted through at axle mandrel . . . ahhh)
at least two tires

The bads are just the fact of some dents left by my wife. I have two that can be popped by a buddy but one that needs a good massage. Thus I am contemplating a full jam job to cover all the little imperfections. and the budget begins to get bent.

I hate to say it but I have fast cars and bikes in the garage. This is just a daily driver. Just want to make it fun to drive with out destroying the wallet. Here are my immediate questions.

Is a shorty intake worth while?
- I like the sound and can they really help fuel economy.
Can you buy an axle back that isn't a glass pack?
- not oem, but at least a little back pressure
What is the best bang for your buck on suspension?
- adjustable springs / full coilovers / lowering springs . . . what drop is best and extras parts needed
Is there an optimal wheel size or is it mostly preference?
- I lean toward a wider tires

Thanks for all the input.
Sorry no turbo or insane head work.
Spent the morning under a car and on the bench . . . Life is Good!

I've heard that intakes can improve gas mileage, but I can't say for sure. However, on my 5 speed hatch I have an AEM cold air. It's a bit more pricey than the short ram, but if I drive with a light foot, I've gotten 40-ish mpg city. I'd recommend AEM, whether you go short ram or cold air. As for suspension, lots of people are going to tell you Function & Form Type 1 coilovers. I'm saving for mine as we speak. They're around $600, but from what I hear, they're phenomenal for the price, and they're fully adjustable. Do a bit of research on them to find out more. You may need a camber kit depending on your drop.

for suspension i recommend the Function and Form coilovers, i just bought my set today waiting for them to come in now, they are realitivly inexpensive around 600 or so depending on where you get them but ive heard many great things about them, (got mine from meng motorsports, one of the sponsors on here)

Welcome back to the civic world. Go with AEM short ram intake, cold air cost too much and you dont get much out of it. If you buy cold air intake you need to buy an intake bypass to avoid getting water in your engine, addition $50. The benefit of having an short intake is that it makes your engine look lighter and you could work on your car better with the extra space. Definately worth it from that perspective. As far as wheels, majority here say 16's are the best fit. I believe 17 are better. but, your choice, you could go with the majority or whatever you think is more appealing. As far as suspension, I hear alot about function and form type 1 coilovers and skunk2 springs and shocks combo. I dont have either so I cant comment on the ride.
