So here's my story....i was given a 2000 hatchback with a blown engine for FREE...i wanna turn it into a comuter car. I wanted to know if i can put a d15 engine in instead of a d16 and have it pass smog? I ask cause I see JDM d15 is cheaper than a D16...any help would be cool. Also since i have the engine still in the car would i need to keep any of the parts from the old engine?

Thanks

i would spring for the d16 especially if that was in it?
d16y8 is not too much and a good engine and should be 0bd2 meaning minimal wiring and parts needed.

Exactly what part of the D16 is blown? You might be able to just replace the damaged internals cheaper/faster than doing a swap and trying to pass smog

@ billy... i replaced the radiator and got it to run with no weird engine noise and then the next day it was burning coolant and white smoke out the exhaust pipe ( i believe headgasket) now it wont start at all. When i had it running i wasnt able to shut off the car cause it wouldnt start back up till the engine was fully cool. Thanks

Sounds like just a blown head gasket. If the engine was blown you would hear some terrible noises. White smoke means coolant in the internals. Check the head gasket and pray that its not a hole in the water jacket

Definitely find out what damage (if any) has been done to the motor from the blown HG before you go out and buy a new shortblock :thumbs up
